Chapter 27 by Mmmm102 Mmmm102

?

Calm yourself with a check and decide if you should move again

"Hold tight, Alexandra," you say, giving the bride's hand one last squeeze and rising. "I'll be back in a moment. Don't you dare think about what happens if your train snags on the pathway." You rise, stepping toward the bathroom as the Bloom is brought in. Carma's eyes immediately flick toward it, desire to wear the gemstone pulsating through her body and driving her to distraction. A sense of excitement shudders through her body.

You snap to your senses, and walk purposefully into the bathroom. Inside, Lucille DeWitt is powdering her nose. You give her a Carma smile as you join her at the sinks. "Don't worry, your nose looks fine," you say with mock sincerity. DeWitt, at least, doesn't buy it. She gives you a look that could shatter glass. You smile, and study Carma's face in the mirror. Your mind rushes back to your training as you gaze intently around her pupils, looking for the telltale sign. A seal-suit is never completely possible. Nobody can ever become trapped inside a suit forever. It is, however, possible to encode a suit. Slowly, the mind of the suit will override the user. The user will simply forget they are wearing a suit. Gunther stated this is done with a green button. When you said you'd never seen one of those, his answer was simple. Pray you never will.

Carefully, with the delicate poise required with Carma's nails, you reach up to your eyelid and turn it inside out. Lucille looks at you with disgust, but goes back to her own preparation. You search for the sign you were warned about in class.

Why am I bothering with this? I already know I look perfect. Just ruin the bitch's wedding and get back to Holden.

You're alarmed as Carma's thoughts penetrate your mind again. And you're even more alarmed when you notice the green ooze, beginning to pool in the corner of your eye. You reach up quickly and dab it. It's a thick, viscous slime, bright green. So far Lucille hasn't noticed, but it's only a matter of time. You spin, and rush to the restroom.

"Aw," Lucille says. "A little nervous? I thought you were so composed, Carma." You hear her heels click out of the restroom. At once you grab for your pen, selecting the white setting, and begin to slice open the suit. Carma's head splits open down the side like a cocoon, as you force Kurt's face free from the mask. It's covered in green slime. Everywhere, your face, your upper body. You should have spotted the faint green ring around Carma's seal. This was a rookie mistake.

You pull yourself free, grab some tissue and begin wiping the slime off, throwing tissue after tissue into the toilet. Carma's body is useless as a disguise now. The opening left by the white pen has already started to seal up, and within moments she's a normal skin again, deflated in her dress, hair still perfect and poised. But you know that if you don it again, you're going to find yourself slowly turning into the murderous bitch.

You pause, and catch your breath. The wedding is minutes away, and you're now trapped with a deflated maid of honor, unsure what has happened. Was this a test as part of the Organization's initiation? Did they expect you to spot it? Or were they trying to get rid of you? A cold shiver runs down your spine. Maybe you've flunked, dropped out. Perhaps the way the Organization deals with failure is to trick its agents into donning a modified suit, trapping them forever as someone else. Perhaps plans are already afoot to spoil Carma's scheme, sending you to jail in another person's life and identity.

Right now, you need to think. Carma isn't an option, and you need to restore her. There's a ceiling grate ahead, and you imagine you could probably squeeze through it, zap Carma, and abandon the wedding altogether, chalking this up as a lucky escape. Once you're out of the air vents, you should be able to find a new skin - a guest or a member of staff. Then you can work out why someone had been 'prepared' with the green pen.

Or you can assume it's a test and find someone else to become. The door outside has opened and closed, and you can hear footsteps outside your stall. They sound alone. If you're going to continue with the plan, you've now got your only potential disguise standing outside...

Climb into a vent? Or find another potential disguise?
