They defeat the Nevermore, and Yang figures it out, though possibly too late.

They engaged in battle against the Nevermore as Ren and Nora, also teamed up, arrived. Ruby managed to deter its first attack along with Yang with bullets from Crescent Rose and Yang's shotgun gauntlets, making it screech out in rage and turn away, though it was clearly coming around for another pass.

This gave them a few precious moments to get ready for another pass, and no doubt the Nevermore would be braced for the next barrage of bullets, so wouldn't be repelled a second time. Jaune looked over at the new arrivals, noting Nora was a hottie, but she unfortunately was paired with a guy named Ren. No having three girls to himself in a single dorm if he got paired with them. But there were much more important matters at the moment.

He saw the hammer that looked very heavy, and blinked at Nora's frame. She had to be a lot stronger than she looked to casually carry that thing around, let alone use it. Ren on the other hand seemed to prefer dual wielding the smaller pistol knives he was carrying.

They began battling the Nevermore in earnest, and were able to defeat it with their skills, and some smart tactics, mostly come up with by himself and Ruby. One highlight involved him getting Pyrrha and Ren to get its attention, and when they did, he used his shield as a springboard to launch Nora at the thing, allowing her to spin through the air and smash her hammer into its face, and causing it to crash, dazed though several trees.

But the cake went to Ruby, who had gotten Weiss, Yang and Blake to collaborate with her, and lured the enraged Grimm to them, where they worked together to launch Ruby at the Nevermore, and caught it in the throat with Crescent Rose, dragging and pinning it to the cliff wall, before she ran up the cliff aided by repeated shots from the sniper feature of the weapon, until the blade **** itself all the way through the bird Grimm's neck, decapitating it, and letting it vanish into ash.

Panting, with Jaune amazed at Ruby's feat, they returned to the relics. Jaune picked up a white rook piece, while Ruby grabbed a white knight one. "I'm queen of the castle!" Nora declared as she grabbed a copy of the same piece Jaune had, and Yang's eyes widened as that clicked… multiple chess pieces… two copies of each type… the pairs that had the same piece were in the teams!

And right now… Nora held her key to being on Jaune's team…
