Post-coital sketch show
The three of you are sitting on the couch. You've handed Vanessa the remote, which might have been a mistake, because she cannot make her mind up of what to watch.
"I swear, it's always when I'm channel surfing that every single TV broadcaster decides to not send shows that are actually worth watching." Vanessa argues frustrated.
You wanted to spend some time with Vanessa, just to check up on how she was faring after your rejection, but all she really wanted to do was to spend time with you and Ollie. It didn't really matter to her what you did, as long as you all did it together. So you eventually decided to just browse some television.
"To me she is the most beautiful girl in the world, so just get on with it." it sounded from the television.
It's a British sketch show of some kind, and the scene in question looked to be a best man arguing about the attractiveness of the bride at his best man's speech of his friend's wedding.
"Okay, to you, right, but you know she is not really deep down." the best man in the sketch argues: "You're not mad. You just fancy her, more than she is objectively attractive..."
The crowd at the wedding boos the best man.
"WHICH IS GOOD!" he yells: "Then you should be getting married. Two people that are a little bit deluded in each other's favour. That's what love is, isn't it?"
"You know he has a point." you state.
"Really? You thinks so?" Olivia asks.
"Yeah, I agree." Vanessa adds: "Sometimes people become more physically attractive when you start to get to know them. You start to overlook their flaws and accentuate their good features."
Olivia looks down with a slightly sad expression.
"Anything on your mind, honey?" you ask Olivia.
"It's just..." she sighs: "The reason you told me all these nice things when we were... you know... was just because of infatuation?"
You were about to reassure her, but Vanessa beats you to it:
"Well, what more could you want?"
"Hmm?" Ollie looks up.
"It's not like Asta lied, right? She finds you absolutely stunning, right?" Vanessa looks at you.
"Right." you answer reassuringly.
"See?" Vanessa looks back at Olivia: "Does it matter whether anyone else finds you pretty or not? The love of your life has admitted to be absolutely smitten with you, who is really left to impress?"
Olivia doesn't answer.
"And just for the record," Vanessa adds: "I, too, think that you are a beautiful girl. I know I'm your sister, and I'm supposed to say things like that, but it doesn't make it any less true in this case."
Olivia looks at you, then Vanessa, then back to you. You look warmly into her pretty green eyes, and you give her the best and most reassuring smile you can. Finally Olivia looks back at Vanessa.
"Thanks sis." she says as they pull into a hug.
"Don't mention it Ollie."
It's good to see that, despite you having rejected her, Vanessa is still in good spirits, and isn't spiteful against her sister for it. Of course, when having gone through what they have gone through, it would probably require more than just a silly love triangle to split them apart. Girlfriends can come and go, but you only have a very finite amount of sisters.
Part of you think that Vanessa is just that good of a person, but there is also a small doubting part of you that thinks that she might not be as okay as she lets on.
As the sketch shows concludes you look at the two girls. Olivia has fallen asleep and is leaning on the couch-arm, her mouth open. You would be worried about her drooling on the cushions, but that wouldn't exactly be the worst stain you have put the couch through this afternoon.
Vanessa is wide awake though. She is intently watching the continuity announcements on the television. You are not entirely sure, but you can kind of feel a sad tinge on her beautiful face.
"Ollie is already asleep, huh?" you start a conversation: "It's only three."
"Well, she hasn't been able to sleep." Vanessa replies monotonously, not breaking eye contact with the television: "She was too worried about what would happen today."
"And how about you?" you ask concerned.
"Hmm? What about me?" she replies.
"How are you holding up?"
"I'm sorry Astrid, I don't really feel like talking." she says in a bit of a cold tone.
Wow. That stings. Although it was a stupid question. How do you think she feels, dumbass? You don't need to rub it in, with her sadness.
"I'm sorry." you say more meekly than you thought was possible.
She softens up a bit. She finally looks up at you. A tear rolling down her cheek.
"No, I'm sorry. I know you mean well. It's just eating me up a bit." she turns off the telly.
"I wish I had a way to fix this." you say.
"I know what you mean." she replies: "I don't exactly want you to leave Ollie for me. If there is any good reason for rejecting me it's to be with my sister."
"I just want you to be happy."
"Then the best thing you can do is to be good to my sister. The better you treat her, the better I will feel about the two of you being together."
"And the less physically attractive you will find me." you joke.
"Yeah, I guess." she laughs.
You place your hand on her shoulder and look at her seriously in her eyes.
"I promise I will be the best that I can be."
"Knowing you that would be more than enough."
Oh, now we know. Now we know. What happens next?
