Pledge Party
A week after Casey had agreed to go with Lucas to try and secure a place with Beta Psi and the 'Pledge Party' as it was know was due to happen. The university officials tended to turn a blind eye to the night, allowing students to indulge themselves and celebrate the new term. It had been a more formal occasion once upon a time but had since given way to a more modern style of celebration. In other words, everyone got drunk and slept with one another. From what Casey had heard anyway. It was also used to mingle and for prospective pledges to demonstrate their interest in joining certain frats or sororities. Chief among them being Beta Psi.
A low sun shone dying light across campus. The lake was perfectly still, mirroring the slowly darkening sky. The main campus was quiet and almost devoid of students. A handful of more devoted bookworms and those who didn't care for parties were still about. But most were already across the large stretches of grass and towards the woodland edge of the dorm blocks where the frats and sorority houses lay. Casey walked side by side with Lucas and Evan. Evan being a classmate of Lucas and a friendly sort. He was tall with curly hair and a constant half smile. A slight lisp in Evans tone had almost made Cass laugh when first meeting him but he had already started to forget it. Seemed so petty now but he could only imagine how much shit Evan might have caught for it when younger.
"And this dumb fuck was giving them shit." Lucas gestured to Casey who shot him a wounded look. "Hey. I was questioning them, that is all. Not like I went after his mum. Unlike someone else I know."
"I know. I'm just a little tight, right now." Lucas said, trying to smile. "No shit." Evan said, snorting. "I'm gonna just slip round the back, don't want to catch any bad cred hanging with you two." He laugh a little and Casey apricated the levity. Lucas had been pretty short with him since the perceived insult against the Beta Psi guys. Perhaps paranoid he'd blown his chance with them via '****' by association to Cass. But Evan had talked him down. It was a party after all. Everyone just wanted to relax and enjoy themselves he had said.
The sound of music and people were heard before the trio could spot anyone. A soft thumbing and the background noise of a hundred conversations. As the house of Beta Psi and the other frats came into sight, the boys slowed. Hundreds of students were crowded around, a small stage had been erected and several houses had been decked out, banners and lights hanging from them. Large speakers had been placed around, projecting the sound far.
"Dam.." Evan commented, his eyes alight with excitement. Casey exchanged a look with Lucas and offered a small smile. "Alright champ. Lets go."
