Chapter 2
by AlexandraS90
Select a case:
Persons of Interest
You had it all wrong, you realised. You want to read Hamlet, you didn't jump straight into act one, scene one, you scoped out the dramatis personae. And the comparison was apt. Something was definitely rotten in Wiltshire, and you were determined to do something about Lovelace before she racked up a body count to make the Prince of Denmark nod his head in approval.
You grab your phone, bump Cafe Bleu by The Style Council on Spotify, and reach for your personnel file. You had the jacket of every cop involved in this sordid mess, as well as background gathered on every pertinent civilian.
Surely there was something in one of these files you could use, and if not, well, it always paid to be informed on the relevant figures
-
Detective Karen Lovelace
IAD's public enemy number one. One of the only openly trans cops in the LAPD, and the "ace" of the Wiltshire precinct. Since earning her detective's shield, Lovelace has slipped further and further down a dark path, skimming off the top of busts, cutting corners, brutalizing suspects and doing whatever she must to enforce her skewed vision of justice on the denizens of Los Angeles.
(Analysis: A complete disgrace to the badge. The sooner we can get her off the **** and into a cell, the better. The lack of strong connections to others (no spouse, no kids) may make exerting pressure difficult, little to lose, though there may still be angles to work (See files: NELSON and LIST) for further details)
Detective Jason "Jace" Ciaran Nelson
Lovelace's partner. A transplant from the NYPD, Jason ("Jace" to his friends) earned his shield at a particularly young age. His primal sense for detective work ensured he would soon be put together with Lovelace. Their explosive partnership has yielded dozens of collars and nearly as many complaints from human rights groups.
(Analysis: This one is dangerous. Volatile, though the psyche profile (see attached) points to lack of feeling of belonging, makes Lovelace bringing him on side more understandable. Target's youth may play into our hands. Though undoubtedly a skilled detective, the kid is unseasoned. If Lovelace can play him then so can I.)
Captain Michael "Big Mac" McDonald
The bumbling, politically grasping captain of the Wiltshire precinct. An ineffectual administrator, he is willing to give Detective Lovelace a great deal of latitude, so long as his precinct's monthly clearance rate remains high. When not working, he can be found at one of Los Angeles' many upscale fedora shops, his biggest vice.
(Analysis: A complete pushover. He'll defend Lovelace as long as she keeps her nose clean and the cage full, but if I come to him with something substantial, he'll help me bury her.)
Detective Aziz Othmani
The workhorse of the Wiltshire precinct. Born to Moroccan immigrants in Oakland, Othmani earned his detective badge with an unprecedented 98 on the exam. He immerses himself in his work to distract himself from his non-existent social and romantic lives. Was initially put together with Lovelace when they were starting out. Though they retain the rapport that only former partners can have, the straightlaced Detective Othmani often takes umbrage with her aggressive tactics. Rumor around the Wiltshire coke machine is that the good detective nurses a crush on his former partner.
(Analysis: Detective Othmani has already been very helpful)
Luna González
Originally hailing from Chihua, Mexico, Ms. Gonzalez spends her nights working a pole at Diamond Showgirls, one of the city's more popular gentleman's establishments. Evidently, Jace Nelson was a frequent patron there. After the young detective was curbstomped out behind the club (see file: SHEVCHENKO), González rode with him in the ambulance and logged more time visiting him than anyone, with the exception of Lovelace. Though what happened to him behind the club has made him hesitant to return, Nelson and González have been seen together at various other locations.
(Analysis: Cops and strippers go together like pizza and diet soda, but the frequency of their dates would suggest something more long-term. One call to Ben Clemens over at ICE and I might have something to hold over Nelson.
Detective Kimberly Truss
A Wiltshire detective, currently partnered with Othmani. While an accomplished detective in her own right, Truss has increasingly courted controversy for her public anti-trans comments and support for alt-lite organisations such as the Power Up Movement and Protect Los Angeles.
Despite receiving official cautions from her captain, Truss has continued to make media appearances and post online about transgender issues.
(Analysis: She certainly bears no love for Detective Lovelace. While the reasoning behind her dislike of her fellow detective may be flawed, she's been running in the same kennel as Lovelace, Nelson and Othmani for a while now. Played correctly, she could be a stream of information to complement her partner. I just wish I could talk to her without wanting a drink.)
Patrolwoman Juno Verrucci
One of the uni's in Wiltshire divison. When she doesn't have her nose buried in one of her fantasy novels, her arrest record and technical scores are better than appearances would suggest.
(Analysis: Young, idealistic officers like her can be a useful weapon against badges like Lovelace and Nelson. After all, how many crooks and killers can someone who reads Noblebright and Hopepunk really tolerate?)
Warren "TV Tropes" Norton
In the **** game since before high school, Norton acquired the street name "TV Tropes" for his fondness for the storytelling wiki of the same name. Norton has survived through troubles medical, legal and criminal, often with a modicum of help from Lovelace and Nelson.
(Analysis: The kid is crafty. He can pull apart what's happening on the street, analyse and interpret it as deftly as the editors on his favourite website might a novel or prestige series. It's pretty obvious Lovelace is running him as a CI. Chances are he knows more about her business, lawful or otherwise, than most people in her precinct.)
Peyton List
Peyton List (born August 8, 1986) is an American actress and professional model, known for roles on Mad Men, FlashForward, The Tomorrow People and Frequency. She began her career on daytime television, playing Lucy Montgomery on the CBS soap opera As the World Turns from 2001 to 2005, before she went to primetime with regular roles on the short-lived dramas Windfall (2006) and Big Shots (2007).
From 2008 to 2013, List had a recurring role as Jane Siegel in the AMC period drama Mad Men. In film, she has appeared in The Greatest Game Ever Played (2005), Shuttle (2009) and Meeting Evil (2012). List also starred in the short-lived science fiction dramas FlashForward (ABC, 2009–2010), and The Tomorrow People (The CW, 2013–2014). During the 2016–17 television season, she starred as the lead character in The CW drama series Frequency. In 2018, she had a recurring role in season 3 of the science fiction series Colony. She also starred on a recurring basis as Poison Ivy in the Fox crime drama series Gotham (2018–2019), and voiced the character in the 2019 animated film Batman: Hush.
(Analysis: The only thing more confusing than how she and Lovelace became an item is how they're still together. One would imagine a dalliance with a crooked cop isn't exactly a good thing for an actress' brand. And yet according to Det. Othmani, they've continued an on-again, off-again fling since their paths first crossed. Ms. List could be just what we need to put Lovelace inside.)
