Chapter 18 by TicImagine TicImagine

What's next?

Overshadowed

The warehouse air grew heavy, charged with a static electricity that tasted of ozone and sour fear. Inside the shared headspace of Hailey’s body, Aaron felt a shift. The burning, chaotic presence of Ramsey wasn't just sitting beside him anymore; it was expanding, blooming like a drop of ink in water, but the color was wrong.

It wasn't the angry red of the notebook anymore. It was a sickly, neon green.

"What... what are you doing?" Aaron stammered, his spectral voice echoing in Hailey’s mind. He felt the girl’s nervous system catch fire, a sudden, intense wave of heat that had nothing to do with temperature and everything to do with raw, unbridled stimulation.

"I'm going to teach you a lesson, boy," Ramsey’s voice reverberated, deep and distorted. "You wanted to play with the body? You wanted to feel? Let me show you what this vessel can really do when you stop holding back."

"No! Stop! She can't handle—"

"Listen to me!" Ramsey roared, cutting off Aaron’s protest.

Before Aaron could scream again, Hailey’s physical body began to hum. A spectral green glow erupted from her pores, bright and blinding, illuminating the dusty warehouse shadows. Her body seized, every muscle contracting at once, shivering violently as if she were standing naked in a blizzard. But she wasn't cold. She was burning up.

"Ghhhuuugh!" A guttural sound ripped from Hailey’s throat, a noise no teenage girl should ever make.

"Here we go," Ramsey whispered.

Suddenly, Hailey’s right arm whipped backward with a sickening velocity. *CRACK.* The sound was dry and loud, like a tree branch snapping in a storm. The shoulder joint dislocated, the limb dangling at an impossible angle behind her, but the green energy pulsed through the injury, overriding the pain receptors with pure, chaotic noise.

At the same moment, her head twisted sharply to the left, the vertebrae popping like a machine gun.

"Stop it! You're breaking her!" Aaron screamed from the inside, thrashing against the green tide, but he was paralyzed.

Hailey’s hands—controlled by the madness—flew to her face. Her right hand clawed at her jaw, forcing her mouth open until the corners of her lips began to tear. Her left hand clamped onto her nose, pulling it upward and outward with ferocious strength, as if trying to rip the cartilage right off her face. Her expression was a mask of self-mutilation, eyes wide and unblinking.

Then, gravity seemed to lose its hold on her. Her torso jerked backward, bending at the waist with a terrifying speed. She snapped back a full ninety degrees, her spine curving into a grotesque arc. Her midriff, exposed by the pink crop top, stretched tight, her belly button protruding as her abdominal muscles pulled to their breaking point.

She hung there for a second, defying physics, her head dangling upside down, staring at the dirty concrete floor behind her heels.

"More!" Ramsey laughed.

With a wet, snapping sound, her body jerked upward again, whipping her back into a standing position. But the momentum didn't stop. Her head was **** back, face aimed directly at the rusted ceiling beams.

Her eyes were gone. The brown, the purple, the red—all erased. In their place were hypnotic, spinning spirals of neon green, rotating in opposite directions.

"BLaaaagh!" Hailey’s tongue blurted out of her mouth, stretching unnaturally long, lolling over her chin. A fountain of saliva erupted from her open maw, spraying into the air like a geyser, splashing back down onto her face and chest.

She stood there, a statue of madness, while her arms began to shake violently, flailing right and left in a blur of motion. She looked like she was being electrocuted.

Aaron watched in horror from the sunken place in her mind. It looked like agony. It looked like ****. But the terrifying part was the feedback loop. There was no pain. There was only a blinding, overwhelming sensation of *existence*—of nerves firing at 1000% capacity.

Her hands suddenly snapped inward. They slammed against the sides of her face, hugging her head with a crushing grip. She squeezed, her fingers digging into her scalp, pressing with enough **** to crack her own skull.

"Explode..." the word hissed through her clenched teeth.

Her arms slid down, crossing over her chest to crush her breasts, flattening the soft tissue against her ribs. Her legs slammed together, thighs grinding against each other, squeezing the emptiness between them. She was compressing herself, trying to fold her entire existence into a singularity.

Her face was a mask of stone—emotionless, slack, dead—while her body vibrated with kinetic energy. Inside, her mind felt like it was shattering, dissolving into billions of screaming cells. She was on the precipice of a total blackout, the green energy threatening to burn out her synapses permanently.

And then, just as the tension reached its breaking point—snap.

She let go.

Her arms fell limply to her sides. Her legs unlocked. The tension evaporated instantly. The blinding green aura that had surrounded her skin was sucked inward, disappearing into her pores like water into a dry sponge.

Hailey stood perfectly still. She blinked. Her eyes were no longer the warm brown Aaron knew, nor the blue of his own, nor the red of Ramsey. They were a dull, flat green. Her mind felt hollowed out, rearranged. Not broken, but... *other*.

The silence was deafening.

Suddenly, a violent spiritual pressure built up in her chest. It was a rejection.

*VOOM.*

Three spirits were ejected from the single vessel at once.

Hailey’s ghost—a translucent, terrified replica of herself—stumbled out of her own body, landing on her spectral knees.

Aaron’s purple ghost form was thrown to the left, tumbling through the air.

And Ramsey’s red mist shot out to the right.

Hailey’s physical body stood there, empty, breathing shallowly, waiting for a pilot.

Ramsey didn't hesitate. The red mist streaked across the room, diving straight for Aaron’s **** physical body, which was still lying on the floor where he had left it.

"No!" Aaron screamed. He scrambled mid-air, his ghost fingers clawing at the emptiness. He lunged toward his own body, trying to intercept the demon. "That's mine!"

He was too slow. Ramsey slammed into Aaron’s chest. Aaron’s physical body gasped, the eyes snapping open—glowing bright, sinister red. A cruel smirk instantly twisted Aaron’s lips.

"Too slow, kid," Ramsey-in-Aaron said, standing up and dusting off his jeans.

Aaron turned, panic rising. He looked at Hailey’s ghost, who was floating there, looking at her own empty body in shock.

"Hailey! Get back in!" Aaron yelled.

He tried to fly toward Ramsey to fight him, but suddenly, a powerful vacuum **** opened up behind him. It was coming from Hailey’s empty physical body. The vessel, having been stretched and hollowed out by the chaotic energy, was starving for a soul. It became a spiritual black hole.

"Wha—" Aaron felt himself being dragged backward.

"Aaron!" Hailey’s ghost screamed as the vacuum caught her too.

"No, no, no!" Aaron clawed at the air, but the pull was irresistible.

With a wet *thwump* sound, both Aaron and Hailey were sucked violently into Hailey’s physical body.

They slammed into the flesh together, tumbling into the darkness of her mind, locking the door behind them.

Hailey’s physical body gasped, her green eyes widening as two souls crashed into the driver's seat at the exact same time.
