Chapter 4

Who becomes the protagonist?

Orson Micheals

When it comes down to it, life becomes a monotony of sort. We dream of doing things outside the norm as a way to cope and Orson wasn’t any different.

The 5’9 foot man that doesn’t look particularly interesting had no such interest in doing big things because even if he tried, he’d feel like it wouldn’t change his mood.

It’d just be another day doing whatever trying to get through the day.

Maybe he had depression…

Shrugging that thought away for now, Orson happened to stop by that trade store that buys and sells certain products to particular kinds of people.

He often stopped by cause he was friends with one of the workers and the staff didn’t mind him stopping by too.

It seemed to be a slow day considering Joey Brenner, said friend was lazing at the counter.

The two caught up and talked about how their lives were going since the topic came up.

“You know Ore, I’ve been working here for 6 years now and I know that pretty soon this place will be the pits for me. I figure instead of blowing my fucking brains out, you and me could do something to get us into the real good kind of shit, you get me?”

Orson raised an eyebrow wondering what he was meaning but figured he’d play along out of respect.

“I mean, I guess so but how would we do that?”

Joey got close and whispered to him as if admitting an evil plan.

“I can’t say anything now but pretty soon, it’ll be big.”

“O… kay.”

He shrugged and turned his body to lean against the front of the counter. He glanced nearby and noticed a small thin box partially open.

Checking it out revealed a well looking piece of wood that looked just like a wand from Harry Potter.

Joey noticed his curious gaze and looked at the thing he was looking at.

“Ore, why’re you looking at that thing like it’s anything but trash.”

“Trash? What do you mean?”

Joey shrugged, “The things been gathering dust for days. I didn’t get why it even came here since I just found it on the counter. My guess, it’s some stupid prop or something cause nobody was here when I found it.”

“Oh…”

Despite the fact it was likely a toy or prop, Orson couldn’t help but think back to his days watching the HP saga from movies, video games and even the book series.

It was a time where he felt nostalgia as a kid and a part of him missed that.

“You want the piece of junk then just take it already. I don’t care!”

“…”

Orson figured telling Joey he wanted the thing would make him look like a dork but instead Joey didn’t seem to care so…

Leaving 5 dollars as payment so as not to get Joey in trouble, Orson bought the prop wand.

Before leaving the store, Joey told him to expect a text in a couple days.

Orion nodded and left to head for home at his apartment.

Some time later…

It was around 9:30 when Orson finished his tv dinner. Since he didn’t have to work tomorrow, he could just relax at home.

Laying back on his sofa, Orson thought about what Joey said and came to wonder if anything better then this would make a difference.

Then he glanced at the box near him. He kept the thing with him all day.

He pulled the wand out of the box and twirled it around.

For a fake wand, he couldn’t help but feel it was weighted more than it looked. He smiled though and started fake casting spells for a couple minutes until he started feeling stupid and lost the smile.

He then looked at the thing with a sad expression.

“God, I wish I could cast real magic with this thing…”

Then before he put the wand away, he saw that his old tv was suddenly showing static.

Groaning with frustration, Orson went to pound on it to get it to clear away the static but had no luck.

Looking at the wand still in his hand, he figured he give himself a small laugh even if it still felt stupid to cast fake spells.

He stood back and decided to cast a classic spell he remembered from the old Pc game of Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone (or Philosopher’s Stone if you want to be technical.)

“FLIPENDO!”

Then unexpectedly, a small ball of light appeared from the wand itself and shot right at the tv causing it to push back hard against the wall.

Orson… did not expect that.
