Where before now, Bathilda had put her all into helping Draco, she now found herself dragging her heels. Oh, she told Draco she was doing her best, and he seemed to believe her. But half the time she went to the library to research, he went with her, and they rarely ended up doing any reading.

While they hadn’t moved into outright sex yet, it still felt like their relationship was progressing. The more time they spent together, the more Draco let his passion breathe into her, as they snogged in corridors and dry humped in the Room of Requirement. It seemed to Bathilda that he had far too much stress and anxiety, what with the orders from You-Know-Who and all, and now he saw her as an outlet for releasing all of that emotion.

Of course, Bathilda hoped it was more than that, too. She did sometimes find Draco staring at her, as if entranced by her beauty. Those moments just made her pride swell ever larger. But she could still feel him holding back from really putting himself into their relationship. She feared he could tell she was still hiding something from him.

The weeks flew by, and after almost a month since she’d last seen the Headmaster, Dumbledore set up another private lesson, with more memories to show Bathilda. She was already beginning to put together something from them. It seemed that, despite all his manic anger, You-Know-Who was a sentimentalist, in his own way. He craved attention, and was drawn to epic stories and famous witches and wizards. Why that was important, she didn’t yet know.

It was shortly after that lesson, which included Dumbledore pointedly reminding her of the task she had still yet to finish, that Bathilda hit the books a little harder, if only so it appeared she wanted to fix the cabinet more than she did. She quickly found herself regretting that decision, as it was while reading a thick tome called, ‘Enchanted Furniture and You: How to Make the Most of Your Home’ that she had the revelation she needed. Mending the cabinet wouldn’t actually be difficult at all, with all she’d learned. By applying her Charms knowledge and the way enchantments interacted with corporeal vessels, she could slip in a Mending Charm around and through the spells already on the wood without upsetting them. The only was, when she fixed the cabinet, her relationship with Draco would end.
