Onemia's Revelation

Back in the other tent Onemia sits down next to Fathi. The eye of Horus pendant jumps on her chest, which is very hard to miss – it allows her to speak and understand english. Onemia sighs and offers her hand to the dig supervisor. “Here, good servant.” She smiles and Fathi frowns: “What did you call me? Coming here with your… what the hell?!” He gets up and it’s Onemia’s time to frown. “What is this? Why are you standing up to me? Are you challenging me, is that it?” She points her staff at him which makes Fathi back away, eyes wide. “Stop, Onemia. Please.” Connor asks and the Egyptian woman judges Fathi and pokes at his belly with the Djed which makes the man fall on his ass and scream.

“Are you telling me he is not a servant? Then where are all the servants? I see guards outside with those things you call rifles. Is it not good manners to kiss a lady’s hand in this time?” She looks at Connor raising her eyebrow. He shrugs and Fathi crawls to Onemia’s legs and kisses her hand and the woman nods: “Very good. Pardon me. I am a **** of my traditions. Baya must’ve told you, but I was regarded as a prophet back in the day. Not so much anymore I would guess. Do you still believe in the light of Ra? In gods who guide us to salvation?” She looks down at Fathi who is shaking in fear.

“Kinda. Not to blow your mind, but there’s actually a lot of religions all around the world… wait, you know there’s a world outside Egypt, right?” Connor sighs and the woman squints her eyes. “Why of course. I am not uneducated. There is the great Sahara towards sunset. That is where Ra’s kingdom lies. Mortals can never reach it as the desert is endless and magical. Towards sunrise, past the ocean and the Nile lies the kingdoms of Mesopotamia and Babylon. Great nations, but awful, awful traditions. Their lands are at the edge of the world where only the darkest abyss opens and where the damned are sentenced! Down the Nile the lands of the trees start. But those are only rumors and frankly I don’t believe it. It only makes sense that the edge of the world awaits the ones who follow too far the Nile. Everyone knows Memphis is the capital of the world, no? The golden location fit for gods, hm? And past the nile is a vast ocean, beyond which lies the islands of the Minoan. But no land is beyond that ocean, for it merges with the very sky above us. That is the world we live in.” She says proudly and smiles at Connor who is trying to hold in his laugh and tilting the hat down to cover his smirk.

“No? Are you telling me the highlands of the Nile are green and plentiful? Tsk, I can’t believe this.” She pouts and Connor gets up and points at a globe sitting on a table nearby. “Look here, Onemia. This is the world.” He lets the girl walk closer and she laughs and holds a hand over her mouth: “You can’t be serious! A ball? Haha! What? Are we living inside?” Connor turns the globe and points at the location of egypt and Onemia looks closer. “This writing of yours is so rough but… why is… this is not correct! How?! No… No no no! What is this… this Libya? This Sudan? It is Egypt! It is all Egyptian land! What has gone wrong? Wh-...” She looks disturbed and looks at her staff and presses it on her chest.

“Oh my legacy is ruined! I am nobody anymore! I should join my kind in the a-afterworld… How could I, the prophet of Osiris, the god of the underworld itself not join everyone else?! No, I must-...” Connor grabs her wrist and pulls her close to him: “Listen! Sure, the world is now a bigger place. But let me assure you, we’re all the same still. Were there guys back in the day who stared at your chest?” The girl looks at him uncomfortably and nods shyly. “You know that’s true now too. What changed is that there’s more. But the old still exists. People are people. And discovery is what we do here. You said it yourself. And I believe you. It’s great we are uncovering the old world. So get a hold of yourself and let us be proud of resurrecting you.” Connor lets go and the girl blushes and leans on her staff. She takes a moment to take it all in and then looks back up. She kneels down and takes Connor’s hand: “T-then let me do as an Egyptian woman should to a man of authority.” She smiles and kisses Connor’s hand.

It seems that the initial culture shock is past and the girl seems more open to spending more time with the rest.
