Chapter 17 by bigdamnvillain bigdamnvillain

To be continued

One Month Later

You're five hours into the graveyard shift when your phone alerts you that someone is moving around in Apartment 44D.

Showtime!

You radio the front desk guard to say you're not feeling well and ask if he can cover for you the rest of the shift. You're New Guy, so he's obligated to give you a one-sentence lecture about taking the job seriously, but his heart isn't in it. At this time of night, the place is dead, and even when it’s busy he mostly treats the job as a chance to watch sports and flirt with rich bitches.

It’s just as well he doesn’t take the job as seriously as he’s telling you to. If he were paying any attention, he might notice you take the service elevator to the 44ᵗʰ floor instead of down to the garage.

It only took a few days to get hired as a security guard in Diana Prince's apartment building - you knew a guy who knew a guy who was happy to bring you on and was willing to handwave certain aspects of the background check. The fact that you requested graves and said you preferred to work in the windowless monitoring room instead of the lobby helped.

The elevator opens onto 44, one of a handful of floors where the cameras had "mistakenly" been set to not record. Oops. You move down the hallway past 44D, unlock the next door, and disappear inside the small maintenance room you’ve set up shop in.

The guards have emergency access codes for every apartment; but using them automatically notifies the tenant, and you didn’t want to risk tipping her off. But from here you were able to access her door lock pad from inside the wall so you can open it “manually” whenever you want without triggering notifications.

You could’ve gone into Diana’s apartment and planted some hidden cameras and the like. But you’re not sure just how acute Wonder Woman’s senses are. You’re pretty sure she doesn’t have x-ray vision, but can she spot a pinhole camera? Can she smell if someone’s been in her place? Who knows, right?

So erring on the side of caution, you ran a borrowed borescope camera under her door to check out the layout – nice place BTW – specifically locating a nice framed landscape painting on the wall that backs onto your maintenance room. Then you drilled into the wall behind it from the other side and carefully cut through the drywall until you reached the wallpaper.

Thermal cameras are damn near everywhere these days, so it didn’t take long for you to find a buddy who had a decent one and would loan it to you. They can't really see through walls of course. But a painting and a layer of wallpaper? That it can do!

It took you barely a week to get everything set up. After that it was just a matter of waiting until she was home during one of your shifts.

The thermal image isn't clear enough to make out faces, but you can definitely see a woman matching Diana's build moving around the living room. Looks like the sliding door to the balcony is open, which must be how she entered. Switching on the wall microphone, you hear a woman's voice humming to herself in what you’re pretty sure is Greek.

Target acquired motherfucker!

What's your move?
