One last indignity to end the day

Bella was so focused on reaching the Subway Station and ending her ordeal, that she wasn't paying proper attention to the sidewalk.

"Eeeeeeeek!" Bella shrieked as she dropped straight into an open maintenance hole.

It was over an hour later when the sewer grating outside of Bella's apartment building slid open and a dirt-coated hand reached up out of the darkness.
