Everyone is Finally Ready to Move On

One Last Heart to Heart with David

As the clinking of dishes and feminine laughter drifts from the kitchen, you and David settle deeper into the couch, the Barolo warming your blood and loosening tongues. The candlelight casts intimate shadows across your living room, creating a pocket of privacy for two friends with a shared impossible secret.

"So," David says again, swirling his wine. "New York. Engagement. Everything changing at once."

"Life has a way of doing that," you reply, meeting his eyes. "Especially after... you know."

David nods, understanding immediately. "I still dream about it sometimes," he admits quietly. "Watching you transform right in front of me. One second my flatmate, the next... a petite redhead with freckles and that Irish lilt."

You take a deep sip of wine. "I still feel phantom sensations occasionally. Reach for things at the wrong height. Or feel... echoes."

"Echoes?"

"Of how it felt to be in her body." You lower your voice further. "How it felt when Clara first touched me. When you both did."

A flush creeps up David's neck, not entirely from the wine. "Jesus, Matt. That night... I never thought I'd—we'd—"

"I know." You lean forward, elbows on knees. "But that's the thing. Without that app, without Mia... none of this happens. You and Zara. Me and Clara. It's like the universe took a sledgehammer to our lives, and somehow the pieces fell into a better pattern."

David pulls something from his pocket—a small black box. "I've been waiting for the right moment," he says, pushing it across the coffee table. "Engagement present."

Inside the box is a pair of sterling silver cufflinks, each bearing an intricately crafted Trinity knot that matches your tattoos.

"David, these are perfect," you say, genuinely touched.

"Had them made last month," he admits. "I knew you'd propose eventually. The timing's just... convenient for the move."

You close the box carefully. "About that. You know it doesn't change anything, right? Between us?"

David's expression shifts, vulnerability showing through his usual confidence. "Doesn't it, though? You're the only person on the planet who knows what happened to me—what I saw, what I felt. When I tell my therapist, I have to pretend it's all metaphorical."

"And you're the only witness to the most transformative experience of my life," you counter. "Pun absolutely intended."

The joke breaks the tension, and you both laugh, the sound mingling with the women's conversation from the kitchen.

"Thursday nights," David says suddenly. "No matter where I am. Video call, games, whatever. Our standing appointment."

"Absolutely," you agree without hesitation. "And the flat will always be here for you."

David leans back, some tension visibly leaving his shoulders. "You know what's strangest? Sometimes I catch myself thinking about Mia as if she were a different person who left. Not as... you."

"She was, in some ways," you admit. "Parts of me I never knew existed until they had copper hair and freckles."

"Do you miss her?" David asks, his voice careful.

You consider the question honestly. "Not in the way you might think. I don't miss being her, but I'm grateful for what she taught me. About myself. About Clara."

David nods slowly. "About all of us, maybe."

The kitchen door swings open as Zara emerges carrying a steaming platter. "Dinner's ready, gentlemen! Clara's just bringing the sides."

As you both stand, David clasps your shoulder. "We're good?"

"Better than good," you affirm. "We're impossible."

The private joke makes him grin as you move toward the dining table, where the next chapter of your impossible friendship awaits.
