On the jet, some serious talk!

"We should arrive at the island within a few hours," Toshinori noted as the jet took off the next morning, and everyone was buckled into their seats. He turned towards Izuku and plucked a hair. "Speaking of which, that's enough time for you to... eat this!" he smirked.

"Wait, why are you giving me One For All again right now?" Izuku blinked, but took the hair, and swallowed it anyway.

"Because there are actually some carnival games of a sort on the island, ones where you can compete using your Quirk," All Might explained. "I figured you might like to participate in some of them."

"Wouldn't the embers of One For All do just fine though?" Ochaco questioned him curiously. "I mean, they're enough to have lasted you this long before we came up with the idea for you two to play hot potato with it, right?"

Setsuna sniggered. "That's a funny way to put it, but yeah, I'm curious about that too," she remarked.

"We think it's because All Might had One For All for years," Izuku explained. "The flame burned in him long enough to leave more embers behind. I tried using the embers once, and I estimate that the amount currently within me would last me about ten minutes. Less if I used it at a higher intensity."

"Exactly," Toshinori nodded, looking at his right hand, hesitating slightly, before continuing. "In truth, I'm still losing the embers I have faster than I am replenishing them whenever I have the Quirk. Though it has slowed drastically. My retirement has been delayed by this plan at least. Instead of months, it may be a matter of years at this point. One year if I'm not conservative with them."

"That's right... He's still taking on his current form when in private, even when he has One For All to increase the replenishment as much as possible," Izuku added. "As for me? We agreed that I should never use the embers I have unless it's an emergency, in case I later get caught in one when All Might currently has the source. I'm basically to hoard my own embers like a precious resource."

"That's right. Hence why I pass One For All back to him whenever we expect him to need, or in this case, have an opportunity to, use the Quirk at all. I have embers to spare for now at least," Toshinori nodded.

"Makes sense," Inko mused. "So... Would it be effective if the one without the Quirk held on to one of the hairs of the one who did in case of emergency?" she added, wanting to cover some bases.

Izuku blinked. He hadn't thought of that. "...would that not mean neither of us have the Quirk though, with the passing of it being transferred into the hair, but uneaten?" he asked.

"It doesn't quite work like that," Toshinori mused. "Even if one were to pluck a hair with the intent of passing on One For All, the hair itself doesn't contain the Quirk, merely the intent to pass it on. Once said hair gets processed, a link between current holder and recipient forms via the DNA consumption, and via that link, One For All gets transferred. In short, I could shave my whole head with the intent to pass on One For All, and so long as not a single one of those hairs was eaten, I would retain One For All. The transfer itself doesn't happen until the DNA is digested enough."

"Ah, I see," Izuku replied, plucking a hair and giving it to Toshinori. "In that case, eat this! ...after I've had a few hours to use One For All on said games of course..."

Toshinori laughed, before taking and pocketing the strand of hair. "Might be worth testing if the transfer works with hairs given before One For All is integrated in you again, actually."

With that, the conversation shifted to more casual topics, and Toshinori told a few stories of his Hero work in the past until the jet landed, and they proceeded to disembark.
