Do conditions improve for Valerie?
On the contrary, they get worse
Valerie's next obstacle was a series of balance beams across a shallow pond. A steep barrier at the end meant the only way to get across was to move forward while maintaining one's balance on the beams, switching beams when necessary. It was a task that required balance, focus and precision - all qualities Valerie possessed, but was finding it hard to summon on account for her disintegrating catsuit.
She steeled herself and began to cross the pit, carefully balancing herself while taking careful steps forward. She tried her best to block out the errant thoughts in her mind, particularly related to her increasing exposure.
As if on cue, she felt the seams of the suit under her armpits begin to loosen up. Valerie had her hands spread out in order to maintain her balance, which meant she could do nothing as the gap appeared, then began to grow.
First, it was only a small rip, then soon, it expanded from her armpit down to her waist. Valerie felt a slight gust of wind on her stomach, and shivered. She picked up her pace a tiny amount, wanting to get across before the damage became too large to ignore.
As she moved, her mind began to put the pieces together. The administrative assistant - was it Gloria? - finding her in the corridor and calling her into a meeting, then offering her this suit as a favor. She had accepted it out of relief more than anything, but now Valerie recognized it for what it was.
Gloria had set her up to fail.
That b-woman, Valerie thought, suppressing her flaring temper in order to preserve her focus. Why does she have a grudge against me?
Valerie decided she would find the answers once she finished the course. Thankfully, she soon traversed the last of the beams and hopped across to solid ground on the other side, not a moment after a large chunk of her suit fell off into the water.
Valerie looked at the state of her clothes. Effectively, she was left with a tiny sports bra and booty shorts, alongside small patches of fabric hanging from her wrists and thighs. She looked ahead at the final stretch - a simple sprint to the finish line.
She looked at the time remaining, and realized she had a choice.
She was about a minute under the record time for the course. If she went all out, there had a decent shout at breaking it. Doing so, however, would mean risking complete disintegration of her suit.
Alternatively, she could walk at a more measured pace. She would lose any chance of making the record, but perhaps slowing down would mean a better chance to preserve her modesty.
Valerie looked towards the finish line, where Gloria and her friends had gathered. Maybe it was trick of the light, but she thought she saw a smirk cross Gloria's smug face.
She made her choice, and set off towards the finish line.
