Chapter 8 by Orpheus Orpheus

Is Jessica there?

On the Gazebo, but not under a bench.

It was hard to see the shabby gazebo from the culdesac, and climbing the chainlink fence would make far too much noise, so he took the long way around the block and over to the park entrance. The sun was setting when he left the house, and it had all but disappeared by the time he stood facing the rundown playthings scattered in the dark.

It was silent, except for the quiet sound of water lapping against the rocks a short distance away. He looked toward the nearby shore, where the sound was coming from, and saw her there. First a rustling of pages, now, the whispering of the waves had led him to her.

She was perched effortlessly atop the creaking wood of the gazebo's railing, reading a book by the dim light of the overhead lamps. Wasn’t so hard to find her, after all. It’s not like she was hiding, poised above the sound like that. To him, it seemed like she was waiting to be found. And now I've found her for a second time.

Leon moved towards her stealthily, trying to find a good angle to take the picture he would need to register her. Judging by the fact that the pictures of Lily's ass hadn't given him the option to register her, he had a feeling that he'd need her face in the frame at the very least.

"~...oh, serenity
Someone, please, tell me
Ohhhh, what is it they say?
Maybe I will know one day
~"

A song floated up into the sky from where she was sitting. And there she is, my little sister. That song she’s singing sounds so familiar, but... I can’t put a finger on where I’ve heard it before.

Now that he could see her face, he lifted the viewfinder to his eye. It’d been awhile since he’d really looked at her. The awkward girl he remembered had been almost completely replaced by some unknown golden haired beauty. If it weren’t for her sky blue eyes and cute little nose, he wouldn’t have even been sure it was her. Despite her pulled back hair, baggy green hoodie, and loose fitting gray sweats, anyone could see that she was gorgeous. Did people really change so drastically when they turned 18? It didn’t happen that fast. I just wasn’t paying attention, he thought.

After adjusting his camera setting so that he wouldn’t set the flash off and ruin everything, he took the picture. The usual message displayed, and he selected [Yes] to register her. Cammy showed him the Rank 1 benefits, but there was nothing new to see. An advantage of conversation, and an invisible camera.

This would be his first time testing either. Things were gonna be awkward if all of this turned out to be an elaborate hoax. Now you’re just being paranoid.

He snuck back to the entrance of the park, made sure that he hadn’t been spotted, and began to approach Jessica, and the first test of the Chronicle System’s power.

Is it all a hoax?
