Old Friends not Forgotten
**** to put as much distance between me and the dancing mob, I finally left the beach side and entered the city proper. I came to a screeching halt outside a bank, as I saw several police cars sitting outside. A lone cop outside the bank spotted me, and made her ways towards me with an inquisitive and mischievous glint in her eyes. It was none other than Rebecca, my old partner on the ****.
“Laura! Long time no see. I guess your new career as a PI has taken a downturn,” she said, motioning at my naked body and relishing the opportunity to tease me.
“Just a… minor complication,” I said unconvincingly, trying to save face as my cheeks burned red. Granted, my body was nothing Rebecca hadn't seen before in the station locker rooms, but it was a whole different experience when you were out in public.
"Well better you than me. So, what happened. Stakeout on a cheating spouse go awry? Or are you going undercover as an escape artist?"
“If you must know, two cops mistook me for a shoplifter, and then ditched me for an emergency call. I’m guessing this was it.”
“You mean Hutch and Fensky? They said something about a body pillow. But they said the thief was already naked when they found her...” Rebecca grinned. "Honestly, first that thief in Vegas trapped you in a strip club, and now this? Are you sure you're really cut out for this?"
"HOW DO YOU KNOW ABOUT VEGAS?!"
"You told me you were investigating that club, remember? I got curious and looked up the website, they had pictures." My eyes widened in horror as I remembered that awful night, and the fact that evidence of it existed for my friends to find.
"But back to my point, I feel like you're trying to hard with this PI business. I've heard it's normally just investigating cheating spouses and keeping tabs for attorneys. If catching criminals is what you want, you'd have been better off staying on the ****."
"Stuck on beat patrol tied up in red tape? No thanks!"
"As opposed to being literally tied up? Okay then, you do you." Rebecca tried to walk past me, but I stood in her way.
"Wait! Can't you at least get the keys to these cuffs off of those officers you mentioned?"
“Sorry, you just missed them. They took off pursuing the getaway car, so if you want to wait for them to unlock those cuffs, then you might be here a while. I’d call a locksmith, but I’ve got my hands full of "red tape" here, and the press are on their way. Better hurry out of here before your ass gets caught on a news camera.” Rebecca gave me a playful smack on the bottom, and the last of my dignity escaped in a yelp.
As Rebecca headed off, I saw that our conversation had been keenly observed by the other officers in the area, most of whom were familiar to me. To think, I used to be hot shit back on the ****. Now I was going to be the literal butt of several jokes around the water coolers. Reluctantly heeding Rebecca's warning, I took off running once more. I considered Rebecca's other words as I ran. Was she right? Had I really given up a promising career out of vanity and impatience?
No. I could never be wrong. I didn't need to wait years for a promotion. I'm the damn best Detective in the city. They'd all see.
One day.
