Chapter 11 - Officer vs. Daughter

Torin walked back into 1C still carrying the bat.

The apartment seemed unnaturally quiet after the noise downstairs. His knuckles were scraped, his shirt hung half-open at the collar, and there was a dark smear along one sleeve where somebody had grabbed him. He looked like he’d walked straight out of a fight and into another world.

Gia was waiting for him.

She met him at the door, eyes bright, taking him in from head to toe. For a second she said nothing. Then she stepped closer, close enough that he could feel the warmth coming off her, and lifted one finger to trace slow circles through the hair on his chest.

“What happened?” she asked.

Torin let out a breath through his nose. He told her straight.

How he’d gone for the rent. How Brask and the others had laughed in his face. How the argument had turned ugly almost immediately. How the first shove had become a punch, and then suddenly there had been three of them on him.

How he’d fought back.

He didn’t dress it up. Didn’t pretend he hadn’t enjoyed the moment when Brask finally realized he’d picked the wrong man to corner.

“Self-defense,” Torin said, glancing down at the bat still hanging loosely from his hand. “That’s what it was.”

Gia’s finger never stopped moving.

She listened without interrupting, her expression changing almost imperceptibly as he talked. There was concern in her eyes at first. Then something warmer. Something that made Torin wonder whether she was listening to the story at all anymore—or simply watching him tell it.

When he finished, she looked up at him.

“They’re the tenants. You’re the landlord. They should pay so you did nothing wrong.” The words landed differently than he expected.

Maybe it was the certainty in her voice or the way she said them without hesitation, as if there had never been another possible answer. Or maybe it was the fact that, after everything that had just happened, she was looking at him like he had nothing to apologize for.

Her expression shifted and the next second she was on him—mouth hard against his, hands already pulling his shirt open. He backed her into the kitchen without breaking the kiss. Her ass hit the cold marble slab as she hopped up, legs wrapping around him, shorts already halfway down.

He shoved the rest of her clothes out of the way. She was already wet when he pushed inside in one long stroke. Gia moaned into his mouth, nails dragging down his back.

He fucked her right there on the counter, deep and steady, one hand braced beside her head, the other gripping her hip hard enough to leave marks. The slab was cold under her skin. His body was hot. She came first, shaking, biting his shoulder to stay quiet. He followed right after, buried, filling her while she clenched around him.

They stayed locked together for a long minute, breathing hard, before he finally pulled out.

The next morning, Torin was already back in his old apartment on the third floor. He had spent the early hours cleaning the place until it finally felt like his again. The desk was set up against the wall, the ledger lay open in front of him, and the bat leaned against the wall within easy reach. For the first time in a long while, he wasn't waiting for someone else to decide what happened next.

The knock came mid-morning. When Torin opened the door, an officer stood in the hallway with Brask and Leena right behind him. Two more men waited farther back, filling the narrow corridor and making it clear they hadn't come for a friendly conversation. Leena's eyes were bright with the same old satisfaction. She clearly expected to see the limp, the hesitation, the easy target she'd grown comfortable with.

Then Torin looked at her.

The limp was gone and so was the fear. Whatever scary she'd once seen in him had disappeared, replaced by a calm that made her expression falter.

Brask noticed and suddenly finding the floor much more interesting than Torin's face.

The officer stepped forward, grabbed Torin by the collar, and yanked him half a step toward the doorway. "You little fucker. You still don't get it. Doing another stunt, let me throw your ass in a cell myself."

Torin didn't fight him. He simply let the older man hold his collar, his eyes remaining fixed on Brask and Leena. There was no point giving the officer the reaction he wanted. They had come expecting the old Torin, the man who would shrink the moment someone with authority raised his voice. They were going to have to deal with someone else.

Then Gia's voice cut through the doorway. "Dad. Stop."

She walked into the corridor like she owned the building, completely calm despite the tension in the room. She stepped between them, reached for her father's hand, and peeled his fingers away from Torin's shirt before putting herself squarely between the officer and Torin.

"He's the landlord. They attacked him when he asked for what he's owed so he defended himself. That's it."

The officer's face darkened. He opened his mouth, but Gia didn't give him the opportunity to regain control of the conversation.

"You touch him again and I'll make sure every video on my channel starts with the story of a police officer protecting deadbeat tenants instead of his own daughter's partner." She held his stare without blinking. "Try me."

For several seconds, nobody said anything. Torin watched the tenants instead of the officer. Brask's jaw tightened as he tried to maintain his composure, while Leena's eyes dropped toward the floor. Neither of them had anything to say now. The confidence they'd arrived with had drained away the moment they realized Torin wasn't going to be intimidated.

Torin finally looked at the officer and gave him a slow, quiet smile. "Rent," he said. "By evening. All of it." His gaze shifted toward Leena. "You heard me."

Her voice came out small. "Y-yes."

The officer left first, still shaken, but didn't say anything, followed by the others. Brask and Leena went with him without another word, and no one looked Torin in the eye as they made their way down the stairs. Torin remained in the doorway until they were gone, listening to their footsteps fade through the building.

Later that same evening, at the third-floor door. Leena stood there alone, nothing in her hand, her eyes fixed on the floor.
