What more can go wrong...
Nothing else, maybe.
Looking at your watch, it was getting close to six as the police finished taking your statement.
When the girls came back after running to the office, they had both Barbara and Leonard with them. Personally, you thought that Coach Reese had done this. But Leonard insisted that Lily's father did this. You and Barbara shared a look, but you stopped short of confessing what you knew about the coach's extracurricular activities. There was nothing more to say.
So here you were. Almost 6 because it took the police a good two hours to show up, it being a nonemergency. They were pretty laid back about this until Leonard explained that they had run off an Asian male in his 30s to 40s a couple of times. They took the statement, but honestly, what could they do? Watching the officers drive off, you opened your car door and got in. Looking over, the girls had finished their homework and were just chilling.
Closing your eyes, you just breathed in before realizing that after close to 7 hours, your erection had gone away.
Reach over. Krystal laid her hand on your forearm. "Is everything alright, Uncle?"
"As well as can be expected, sweetheart," you say with a sigh.
Inserting the key, you turn over the engine. As it roars to life, you say, "With everything going on, unless I take time off, I won't be able to get the door fixed before next weekend.
Pulling out of the space, you make your way out of the parking lot. Glancing into the rearview mirror, you could see the concern in Lily's eyes. Smiling, you say, "Don't worry, Lili, I'm certain this wasn't your father; it was Coach Reese."
"How do you know?" she breathed worriedly.
You think about it for a second and figure, why not?
Smiling mirthlessly, you say, "It wasn't your father, Lili. This happened because I have evidence that Reese was blackmailing and fucking students."
Both girls blinked in surprise before replying, "Really," in unison.
After you nod that yes, it's true. Krystal broke out with a barrage of questions. Who is it? How did you find out? Does Jennifer know?
You started by saying, "Yes, Jennifer knows, and she is a girl from my 5th period, Dallas Cabera."
Lili, who was nodding along, gasped, her eyes going wide in understanding when you said Dallas Cabera.
"OMG, that explains a lot." She exclaimed.
"Huh," Krystal asks, looking at her friend. Glancing at her through the rearview mirror, you inquire, "Do you have anything to share, Lili?"
"Last year, the week after homecoming, he came by practice with her and talked with Donna." Lili related.
"Hmmm... what did he say?" You query.
Lily's eyes close as she jogs her memory. "He didn't say anything to us other than leer. But after talking with Donna, she told us Dallas was joining the team as our equipment manager."
Krystal cocked her head in question. "Did you have one?"
"Yes...we did," she thoughtfully replied. "Charlie, he was a senior. After Reese left, she threw Charlie off the team. Saying that he was no longer needed and Dallas was taking over."
"That's weird," you mused as you continued to drive.
"We thought so too at the time," she confirmed. "But if he was fucking her, that would explain why she would disappear from her room during our traveling games. Or when we went to state."
"Jesus," you think to yourself. You knew about Leonard and Dan Lasko being involved. But now it looked like your predecessor Donna was up to her eyeballs in all that Reese was doing. Mentally chewing on the information, you could help think you were forgetting something.
Passing Rockberry Park, it hit you, Dominique Bradley. Jennifer had told you that Reese had been sleeping with Zuri's mother during travelling events involving the football and cheerleading teams. So if Dallas was going to his room too, were they doing the teen together? If so...
This was a house of cards even more precarious than yours.
Without thinking, you slowed down, turning onto Moccasin Way and entering your neighborhood. Blinking brought Dallas back to the forefront of your thoughts. You were now having second thoughts about bringing the sexy Latina into your orbit.
"That ship has already sailed... Daddy," whispered your subconscious. Tapping your signal, you slow down, turning into your driveway. Coming to a stop, you turn off the engine. Opening her door, Lili jumps out and heading inside. Krystal reaches for the handle but pauses, glancing at you.
"Are you okay, uncle?" She asks worriedly.
Looking over at Krystal, you reach out, cupping her cheek. "It's all right, sweetheart; it's just been a long day, is all." Reaching up, she laid her hand on yours. "Are you sure?" she whispered.
Leaning forward, you kiss her forehead, saying, "I'm sure, honey. Head inside, get a bite to eat, and relax. I'll be right behind you."
You could see she was still concerned, but instead of pushing it, she opened the car door. Sitting back, you watch her prance up the walkway before she disappears inside.
"How the fuck did I get here?" You wonder out loud.
"You know how it happened, good buddy; you were led there by your dick," a voice from your past replied. Closing your eyes, you remembered Curtis, your best friend growing up. He always said that 80% of the shit that guys get into is because of their dick.
Opening your eyes, you looked over at the passenger side, and you could almost see him lounging there with that infectious grin of his.
"Man..." the memory waxed in admiration. "I know I told you if you ever got the chance to jump in with both feet." He shakes his head, "And here I thought I was the lucky one."
"I just kinda fell into Curtis..." you sigh. "I'm still not sure what I did to deserve this."
Shaking his head, his smile fell away as he turned serious. "With all the shit you've been through with your mom and your aunt, you were due." He sighs, looking off. "Just promise me you won't fuck it up."
You blink again, and he's now in his desert BDUs. His neck and face were ripped open by the I.E.D. that killed him.
"Don't fuck it up," he whispered as the ghost disappeared.
Blinking, a tear welled up out of your eyes and proceeded to stream down your cheek.
"You're right," you whisper hoarsely. "Somehow I have to deal with Reese and not get caught in the explosion."
Not wanting to be alone anymore, you grab your briefcase and get out of the car to head inside.
What's next?
