Chapter 5 by CMW CMW

Does he pick up the Lamp?

Not yet

Rosemary glanced and saw him reaching for the lamp. "Hey, what are you doing," she said, slapping his hand. "Does the shining golden object in the forest not sound like something we should appraise first?"

Rosemary sat down and began pulling out some magical components. He shook his hand and pouted slightly at her as he watched her work.

She raised her eyes. "Do you know what spell I'm going for?" She continued mixing herbs and divination ingredients together.

"Of course I do! You're going for the standard divination spell, one meant to detect enchantments on objects," Zane replied. "Though I don't know which one you're using specifically, I can deduce that much."

Rosemary chuckled. "No. That spell would use fahhal flowers. And it would be for checking mundane items with magical properties added too them. This spell is for discerning if this item is magical inherently."

She paused as she looked at the flash of her spell. "Hmm. A Djinn Lamp. These can be tricky. Many djinn are tricksters. Definitely shouldn't use its magic. Let's see if it's safe to touch. Do you wanna try that spell?'

He sighed and said, "You know I, with few exceptions, prefer spells that need nothing besides my own energy and an incantation to cast. Even if they're not as powerful and precise as ones that use other elements, they're faster."

"You know I was asked to train you. Are you saying you'd rather I don't? We can talk to your family if so?" Rosemary said with a sigh. Personal magic certainly has its place and he was better at it than most. But if he was only going to use the one type of magic he could use on his own, he'd never advance as a wizard.

"That's not what I meant at all," he stated. "I'm only saying that this is not my specialty, and if Djinn lamps are as dangerous as you say, then perhaps we should leave this to the expert? You wouldn't start training beast tamers with a fully grown wyvern, would you?" he pointed out.

"Even if we wanna leave this to someone else. We shouldn't leave it here. Anyone could find it," Rosemary said. She tried thinking about experts on ancient magic like this. She knew a few back in the day but they were all likely dead by now. She wasn't sure if anymore were raised up yet.

"Hmmm. Goddess of stars. Is this item safe to carry for either of us?"

The word No appeared.

"Either of us?"

The word Yes appeared.

"Which?"

The word Rosemary appeared.

"Interesting. I wonder if it has to do with your heritage. Also you really need to study more. At your level a spell for the god of stars should be easily within your wheel house."

He grimaced at that. "Excuse me for having a specialty," he quipped. "We're not all secretly a hundred... but let me try asking the Goddess a few questions myself," he replied, and let Rosemary walk him through the spell. "Goddess of Stars, is there anyone else you can tell us about this item?"

There was a pause, before the word Outside appeared.

"...you mean it's not of this world, or something?" Zane asked.

Yes appeared.

"...okay, you said it was unsafe, so is this thing malevolent?" he continued.

The next word was Amoral.

"...what does that word even mean?" he asked, going over his mental dictionary.

Rosemary squinted. "You make it sound like I'm asking the world of you when you actually can the spell I originally asked you to do. Also, one doesn't need to be a divination specialist to say you'll never have luck with the ladies if you name drop their age."

Rosemary picked up the lamp carefully with a finger. Making sure not to rub it. "Amoral as in moral but with an a. That means without. So without moral. Not exactly a surprising or ominous thing to find about a djinn lamp. As long as we don't rub it there shouldn't be any issues. Let the sleeping djinn sleep after all."

"Hey, I needed you to walk me through it to make sure I didn't screw it up," he reminded her. He then looked at the Lamp. "Better bag it th-" he started to say, before they heard a growl, and froze and looked to see a Fenrir, a giant wolf monster, emerging from the nearby treeline. "...okay, I might have been cautious enough to insist on coming with you, but I wasn't expecting a Fenrir of all things to come around these parts..." he remarked, nervously drawing his sword. "Ignis," he uttered, forming a Fireball in his hand as the beast approached.

Does Zane set fire to the forest?
