Not very far

You step outside the Pokemon Center and immediately notice two strange individuals. A man and a woman, both wearing lab coats, are scanning the area as if looking for something. The man has a light brown combover, while the woman has dark skin and a darker brown, low ponytail. They both have glasses to complement their lab coats, making them look like total smartypants. They’re the types who typically want nothing to do with you, and yet, you’ve scarcely been outside for two seconds before the man points at you. The two start mumbling under their breath.

“What about her?” the man asks.

“Her? Well, she certainly is the ‘target demographic’ if you will. Wait, wasn’t she in that recruitment video we watched? The one where they had her tied up-”

The man shushes his female counterpart as you walk over.

“Hey, uh, did you guys need something from me?” you ask.

“As a matter of fact, we do,” the man answers. “You see, we’re researchers at Silph Co. Perhaps you’ve heard of it? We’re pretty much a household name, especially among pokemon trainers.”

Silph Co.? It sounds familiar. You retrieve a pokeball from your backpack and check the bottom. Ah! It says ‘Made by Silph Company’ on it!

“You guys made pokeballs!? Amazing!” you exclaim.

“Well, technically those were researched and developed before we ever-” the woman begins, only to be interrupted by the male researcher.

“That’s right! We invented pokeballs! And, as a pokemon trainer, you have the unique opportunity of helping us test my newest invention! We’ll even pay you!”

“Our invention,” the woman scowls.

“Yes our invention.”

“I’m in! …Wait, hang on,” you say. Phew. That was close. You almost agreed without thinking this through properly. You have to control your impulses at times like these. “How much will I be paid?” you ask.

“The budget we have to work with is up to fifty dol-” the female scientist begins, again being cut off by her partner.

“Five-hundred dollars.”
