Chapter 37 by Sam-Kelly Sam-Kelly

How does the talk go?

Not too terribly

There's a silence at the table as you pull your chair out and sit down. Both of your parents are looking at you intently, searching for any semblance of their son. No one really wants to speak up first. The pressure built. It felt like as soon as anyone said anything, everything would spill out as if a dam broke.

"I'm pregnant," you blurt out, your body stiff, hands clenched, gripping onto your seat.

Both of your parents nearly fell out of their chairs. You waited for them to respond but they only stared at you in shock.

You dropped your forehead onto the table.

"After I—changed, Alex came over. He wanted to use the pool. Somehow I was able to convince him I was me. I thought maybe if I hung with Alex I might forget about my predicament, but it only made it worse. He— I— Things got a little out of control," you tried to explain to your parents. You didn't want Alex to get in trouble, not really, but it was hard to explain away.

"Things got out of hand," you rephrase, lifting your head up and shrugging. "And now here we are."

Still your parents were having a hard time speaking, not that you blamed them.

"But what about..." your mom trailed off.

"I still don't know really. I woke up to a call. It wasn't until the crazy person on the other end hinted that something was different that I noticed I changed. It was a guy I think, said he was having fun and that I'd be a girl—for a while."

"H–how long?"

"Indefinitely"

Your mother jumped up and hugged you, and your father wasn't far behind. It felt good being hugged, comforting, like you were safe, but there was another feeling that came with it. Your cheeks flushed and you felt a tingle between your legs.

Continue talking? Stay at the table?
