Chapter 12 by TamLin TamLin

Does the Countess get the last laugh?

Not quite...

The Countess awoke in her coffin and pushed on the lid, and right away she knew something was wrong. But by then it was already too late. Light--horrible, horrible light--was everywhere! And it burned. Someone had moved her coffin outside and awakened her while the sun was still up! Who dared?

Though blinded by the killing rays, she made out two people standing over her. One was Helen! That treacherous little bitch. And the other was--Talbot? Impossible! With a shriek of rage she vaulted from the coffin, claws outstretched, prepared to tear them both to pieces with the last of her strength--

But all that remained of her by then was a pile of bones. The skull clattered to the courtyard floor and rolled, coming to a stop at William's feet. He eyeballed it. "Good riddance, I suppose." He looked at Helen. "How do you feel?"

"Is she really...gone?"

"Gone as they get. Gone as I'd be, if you hadn't switched those silver bullets out for normal ones last night. It was a big risk. I'm grateful."

"I'm not interested in your gratitude, Mr. Talbot. I saved your life, and I'm master of this castle and all of the Countess' holdings now. That means you work for me, until I decide we're even."

William shrugged. Same old story. Why bother looking for a new ending this time? "Whatever you say. Not sure I like the sound of this new job. What's this place I'm going to called? 'The Black Lagoon'? Sounds peachy."

"There's a lot we don't know about the Amazon: plants that haven't been identified, ancient medicine no one in our world has studied. You may find a lead on some kind of cure for yourself."

"I may at that," William said, cracking his knuckles. "But I'll probably just find trouble." And he kicked the Countess’ skull.

THE END?
