Chapter 58

Is he correct in his expectations?
Not quite, we missed an important discussion.
As I walked into the tavern, it was very easy to tell that the air was not as jovial and carefree as it normally was. This was due to a silence that covered the main room. To my great surprise, even the barkeep seemed to have stopped his routine of cleaning his bar in order to watch whatever event was causing this disruption.
It was not hard to tell who was behind it, because not long after I entered I was charged by Silvia. As she neared me, Grutrod somehow managed to get in-between us, blocking her legs and torso from reaching me. She had clearly been crying, and was seemingly filled with rage at the sight of me.
She screamed at me as she tried to grab me, Grutrod having stopped her just too far away to succeed. "What have you done to him you bastard? What fucking curse did you put on him?"
I was utterly dumbfounded at what was going on. I held up my hands in a concerned pose as I spoke, "What is it that I'm being accused of exactly?"
Silvia thrashed, trying to get her legs out from Grutrod's iron grasp. "You know damn well what you did you false prophet bastard!"
I carefully asked the few others around the room, "Would anyone else care to fill me in here?" I felt incredibly awkward, this was not a situation I ever recalled being in.
Something highly unexpected then happened. To the shock of everyone, the barkeep got involved in the situation mostly unprompted, the second time he had done so on my behalf. "The girl thinks you cursed her boyfriend when you healed him or at the party. She thinks so because he just talked about joining your church." And with that, he seemingly decided he had done enough and got back to his normal routine.
At last I looked over to the table. Oliver was sitting mostly still, head somewhat hung and clearly in deep thought, torn over whatever had happened while I was gone. Natalia was nowhere to be seen, but I had no clue as to why that may have been, she had been a bit of a free spirit after all.
Silvia turned red for a reason other than rage after hearing the barkeep, "He is not my boyfriend! We're close friends and I care about him, why do you have to say stuff like that!" It was nice to have her rage not focused on me for a second.
In that split moment of otherwise focused attention, Grutrod pulled some form of martial arts move I didn't know of in my extended knowledge of self defense. The result was Silvia on the ground pinned with him sitting upon her back, her arms crossed beneath him.
As she struggled, he turned to me. "Alright, now that that's been 'andled, we can 'ave a civilized chat." His face turned even more serious, "I must admit, I ain't convinced meself that yeh didn't charm the boy."
I looked around the tavern, "If Natalia were here I would say that she could probably investigate what spells I could cast, however she seems absent. If it means anything, I did turn him down for now at least."
He raised an eyebrow, "What kinda priest turns down a follower?"
I gave an awkward chuckle, "The kind who does not yet have a place of worship, and was asked on the spot without consorting what to do about such things with their god first."
He heavily considered this statement before giving a somewhat satisfied nod, "I suppose yee'd 'ave no reason to lie about that. We could just walk over there and ask 'em ourselves, and yeh don't seem the type who would forget somethin' like that."
Momentarily stopping from her yells at Grutrod, Silvia demonstrated that she was not convinced, "Don't trust him, he could be casting some charm right now!" I internally laughed at how, due to my abilities, I somewhat was. "Why else would Oliver decide to leave on a whim like that? It has to be his fault." She descended into sobs and incoherent shouts after that.
I stood there awkwardly for a few moments before stepping around them silently, getting an accepting nod from Grutrod. I quietly walked up to the table, and stood for a few moments. In the end, I didn't feel like I should say anything, so I simply patted Oliver's shoulder before leaving a quick sketch of where the church would be built, as a way of finding where I was.
Before I left, I gave a similar note to the barkeep, who gave me a nod before pinning it to a board behind him. I carefully maneuvered around the elf and dwarf pair on my way out of the door, and exited back into the town square. Greeted once again by the bustle of the mid day populace, I was left with one major question.
-"What should I do now?" HA, NOW I STOLE IT FROM YOU!
