Does Chloe care?

Nope

Chapter 6 by mkokp mkokp

"Ugh, what's their problem," Chloe said, barely glancing over, already rummaging in her bag for her phone. "Boys are so weird at these things."

I wanted to ask if she'd noticed them earlier too — really ask, get it out in the open — but the question stuck somewhere behind my teeth. "Probably nothing," I said instead, aiming for breezy and landing somewhere closer to unconvincing.

"Mm." Chloe didn't look up. If anything had rattled her, she wasn't showing it — but then, she never really did.

I watched the boys drift off toward the dodgems, still throwing the odd look back over their shoulders, and felt an unwelcome twist of something that wasn't quite jealousy and wasn't quite shame. *They were looking at her too*, I thought. *Maybe more than me.* Chloe, who'd probably forgotten the whole thing by the time we reached the next ride. Chloe, who got to have moments like that and just — shrug them off.

I picked at a thread on my sundress and said nothing else about it, though the thought sat there anyway, small and quiet and not entirely unwelcome: *I wonder what that felt like, from her side of it.*
