Chapter 6 by pmanpman pmanpman

Any questions?

No

You walk into the bedroom without hesitation, your elderly legs carrying you toward the sleek white pod on the left. Morgan follows more slowly, their footsteps tentative on the hardwood floor.

Kira gestures to the pods. "Jordan, you'll take the left unit. Morgan, the right. Just lie down inside. The pods will handle everything else—sedation, nutrient feeds, waste management, nano-machine delivery. You won't be aware of any of it."

You lower yourself into the pod's cushioned interior. The padding molds to your body, surprisingly comfortable. Through the transparent upper half, you can see Morgan approaching their own pod, their face pale and drawn.

"I'm scared," Morgan says quietly, standing beside their pod.

Kira's expression softens slightly. "That's normal. But the process is completely safe. Helix has performed over ten thousand nano-regenerations without a single fatality. You'll just sleep, and when you wake up, everything will be different."

Morgan climbs into their pod with visible effort, their seventy-three-year-old body protesting the movement. Once settled, they turn their head to look at you. "Jordan? I love you. Whatever happens, I want you to know that."

"I love you too," you reply, watching Kira move between the pods, checking readouts on integrated displays.

"Vital signs stable for both subjects," Kira announces. She taps commands into her tablet. "Initializing sedation sequence in ten seconds. Take deep breaths. You'll feel drowsy very quickly, then nothing until you wake up transformed."

The countdown appears on a small screen inside your pod. Ten. Nine. Eight.

Morgan's voice, barely audible: "See you on the other side."

Seven. Six. Five.

A faint hiss as gas releases into the pod. The air takes on a sweet, clinical smell.

Four. Three.

Your eyelids grow heavy. The bedroom ceiling blurs above you.

Two. One.

Darkness takes you completely. The last thing you're aware of is the faint hum of machinery engaging, and then nothing—no dreams, no awareness of time passing, just absolute void as trillions of nano-machines begin their work, dismantling your elderly body cell by cell and rebuilding you according to the specifications you designed.
