Chapter 9
Does Toph Break?
No
"No," Toph growled, her voice low and feral, teeth clenched as she glared up at Azula through the sweat-drenched strands of hair plastered to her forehead. Her body was trembling, every muscle taut as the machine continued its relentless ****, but her spirit—her will—was unbroken. "I’m not yours. I’ll never be yours."
Azula’s smirk wavered for the briefest of moments, her golden eyes narrowing as she leaned in close, her breath hot against Toph’s ear. "You really think you can resist me, little earthbender? Look at you. Look at what you’ve become. Weak. Helpless. Pathetic."
Toph’s lips curled into a snarl, her hands straining against the cold metal cuffs that bound her wrists. She could feel the vibrations of the machine’s movements through the floor, the rhythm of its intrusion threatening to overwhelm her. But she refused to give in. She refused to let Azula win. "You can’t break me," she spat, her voice trembling but defiant. "I’m Toph Beifong. And I don’t break."
Azula straightened, her smirk returning as she crossed her arms over her chest. "Brave words from someone who’s screaming like a common whore," she sneered. "But we’ll see how long that defiance lasts." She gestured to the faceless guard who stood at attention in the corner. "Increase the intensity. Let’s see how strong she really is."
Hours earlier, Toph had been pacing the confines of her cell, her bare feet slapping against the cold stone floor. The dampness of the underground prison clung to her skin, and the faint scent of mildew filled her nostrils. She hated this place. She hated the darkness, the silence, the oppressive weight of captivity pressing down on her. But most of all, she hated the knowledge that Azula was somewhere above her, plotting her next move.
A sharp clang echoed through the chamber, and Toph froze, her head tilting slightly as she focused on the vibrations in the floor. Footsteps. Heavy, deliberate, and accompanied by the faint creak of a metal door. She braced herself, her fists clenching as the sound grew closer.
"Ah, Toph," Azula’s voice purred, dripping with mockery as she stepped into the cell. "How kind of you to wait for me. I was beginning to think you’d missed my company."
Toph turned toward the sound, her sightless eyes narrowing. "What do you want, Azula?" she demanded, her voice sharp and edged with defiance. "Here to gloat some more? Or are you just bored?"
Azula’s laughter was cold, devoid of any real humor. "Oh, Toph. Always so feisty. But I’m afraid your little act of bravado is growing tiresome." She stepped closer, her boots clicking against the stone floor. "You’ve been a thorn in my side for far too long. It’s time you learned your place."
Toph’s heart skipped a beat, but she didn’t let it show. She squared her shoulders, her chin lifting in defiance. "My place? Last I checked, I don’t take orders from you, Princess."
Azula’s smirk widened, her golden eyes glinting with dark amusement. "Not yet," she said softly. "But you will." She snapped her fingers, and the faceless guard stepped into the cell, his movements mechanical and precise.
Toph’s instincts screamed at her to fight, to lash out, but she **** herself to stay still. She wouldn’t give Azula the satisfaction of seeing her struggle. Not yet. "Whatever you’re planning," she said, her voice steady, "it won’t work. I’m not afraid of you."
Azula’s fingers brushed against Toph’s cheek, the touch deceptively gentle. "Oh, Toph," she murmured, her voice dripping with false sympathy. "You should be."
Back in the chamber, the machine’s hum grew louder, its movements more intense as it obeyed Azula’s command. Toph’s breath came in ragged gasps, her body arching against the restraints as the sensations threatened to consume her. But she refused to scream. She refused to give Azula what she wanted.
"You’re strong, aren’t you?" Azula taunted, pacing around the machine like a predator circling its prey. "The great Toph Beifong, the blind bandit, the earthbending prodigy. But look at you now. Helpless. Breaking. How does it feel to know that even someone as powerful as you can be brought to her knees?"
Toph’s eyes snapped open, her blind gaze burning with defiance. "Go to hell," she spat, her voice raw but unwavering.
Azula’s fingers tangled in Toph’s hair, yanking her head back with a vicious tug. "Oh, Toph," she purred, her lips brushing against the younger girl’s ear. "I’m already there. And I’m taking you with me."
The machine’s rhythm became erratic, its movements more forceful as it drove Toph toward the edge. She bit down on her lip, drawing blood as she fought to keep the scream trapped in her throat. Her body betrayed her, trembling with the effort to resist, but her mind—her spirit—remained unbroken.
"You’ll break," Azula whispered, her voice low and dangerous. "They all do. And when you do, I’ll be there to pick up the pieces."
Toph’s vision blurred with tears, but she refused to let them fall. She focused on the vibrations beneath her, the faint tremor of the earth beneath the prison’s stone floor. It was a reminder—a lifeline. The earth was her strength. The earth was her power. And no matter what Azula did to her, that power would never be taken away.
"You’ll have to kill me," Toph growled, her voice trembling but firm. "Because I’ll never break."
Azula’s grip tightened, her nails digging into Toph’s scalp. "Then I’ll just have to keep trying," she said, her voice dripping with malice. "We have all the time in the world."
How will Toph try to escape?
