No sheets on the bed and a commotion at the motel office

Mary gives you a big smile, her dark hair shining in the late afternoon light reflected from the motel's concrete pavement and white-painted cinderblock walls.

She wants it.

You turn the square-topped DO NOT DUPLICATE key with its heavy dangling plastic tag. To your dismay, the queen-sized bed is bare of pad, sheets, and pillows.

"Well doggone it," you say.

"Never rains but it pours, some days," Mary says. "I guess our angels are counseling patience."

There isn't a house phone on the nightstand, either. You snort in frustration.

"I'm too tired for patience, sweetie-pie. Let's leave the bags in here and I'll go back to the office to get this sorted out."

"I'll come with, honeybear," she says.

"One bright spot." You give her a grin. "We're traveling together."

"You and me, honeybear."

You laugh. "You, me, and Old Number One lifting his head for you."

"Oh, you bad, bad man," your wife says.

"Like you said, sweetie-pie, just teasin'. But serious, too. I'm ready to bend you over in front of the mirror, but we need a bed to lie on after."

Mary tilts her head and raises an eyebrow, then nods.

With your bags locked in the room, you and Mary head back out and around the corner toward the motel office.

To see a bunch of flashing patrol car lights and a couple of people being led out of the motel office in handcuffs. You and Mary pause at the corner.

"The clerk and the manager," you say. "I guess we're not gonna get any sheets."

Mary looks on, blinking. She puts her hands together in front of her bosom and say, "May their angels protect them."

"Now where are we going to go?" You shake your head.

"Master Patrolman Dana Polk lives near here," Mary says. "She gave me her card and told me to call, you know, in case."

"I think this is the case," you say.

Back in the room, Mary takes out the card that the veteran lady motorcycle cop gave to her and dials the number.

You snuggle up behind Mary as she stands by the dresser, holding her close with both arms. Old Number One swells up in your pants to settle between her denim-clad buns, only a few layers of fabric separating you from her Pearly Gates. Pinky gates right now, but you'll make them pearly as soon as you can.

If it isn't one thing it's another. Dana Polk isn't answering right now, not even voicemail, and though you're still hot to trot, your hard-on happily throbbing against your wife's buns, it's first things first for Mary.

"We really should get a place to stay before it gets dark, honeybear," she says.

You finally find an room open. It's a decent enough chain hotel, closer to the mechanics than the sketchy dump this place turned out to be. They send a minibus for you.

There are sheets on the bed. The lights and the phone and the TV work fine. There are blackout curtains and an air conditioner at the window.

Mary picks a soup and sandwich place from the delivery flyers. You eat, you watch a little TV together, and you fall asleep.
