Chapter 11 by Manbear Manbear

Do you help this man?

No-one goes anywhere until you say so

Be quiet." You tell the man sharply, and to everyone's surprise he stops his yammering. "No-one goes anywhere until I say so." You move slowly through the barely lit room to the door at the far end of the room. It is a solid wood door with a brass latch and handle. The door opens smoothly on well oiled hinges and you see a short hallway ahead. The small doors on the left and right, and a larger at the end of the hall about ten feet from where you are standing. A gleam of brass shines back at you from the door as you step into the hallway.

“Where do you think this leads?” Asks the sergeant from behind your shoulder. “Maybe this is their treasure room.”

“Let’s find out.” You reply and check the door on your right - a small latrine. Three holes in the floor with small blocks to stand on while you squat on directly ahead of you and a large basin stands against the wall to your left. Something is stuck into the wall above the basin, stepping closer you see a damp piece of cloth has been jammed into the mouth of a carved lion’s head directly above the basin. Pulling out the cloth allows a steady stream of what to flow from the mouth of the lion into the basin below. The water feels cool and smells fresh and is appears to be clear of slime and silt, as it runs into the basin it drains back into a hole in the wall. Simple, but clean and useful, these are much better facilities than you had when you were stationed in Hellopolis.

“Nothing but cleaning scrubs in the other one” reports the sergeant, “let’s try the one at the end of the hall.” Catching a handful of water in your hand you splash some of the grime off your face with the cool water. Not bothering to replace the rag, you leave the room and examine the last door.

Unlike the two side doors, this you has a brass plate and a key hole under the handle. The handle turns freely when you try it, but the door is still securely fastened shut. Turning to your companion you say:

“Go get those keys by the desk, maybe we’ll get lucky.”

“You got it, I think this is their treasure room.” You are doubtful, if you had treasure you wouldn’t keep it down a hall from a bunch of criminals, and if you did you certainly would never leave the keys out for anyone who wandered through the cell room to nab. Listening carefully at the door you think you hear the murmur of conversation on the far side of the door. Sarge comes back with the keys and whatever it was you heard before has stopped.

Maybe you should go back for the rest of the men, or at least your shield, on the other hand you could at least try the keys, if this is a treasure room you don’t want every crowding in and grabbing what they can.

What do you do?
