Chapter 63
by Ovipositivity
Do they defeat the beast?
No chance!
It was hard to make out any details in the haze. Aliara thought she saw a hint of fang or fin, but for the most part it was like staring into a tornado. She gritted her teeth, drew her dagger, and steeled herself to plunge forward. She could hear shouts and grunts coming from the swirling melee ahead, along with a meaty tearing sound. A scream echoed off the walls-- from the sound of it, Kurk's. To Aliara's left, Rhuyem was bracing himself against his staff and chanting under his breath. An ear-splitting roar drowned him out and he stumbled backwards, clutching his ears. Aliara did not spare him a second glance. She plunged forward with her dagger out in front of her.
Out of the corner of her eye she caught a glimpse of Lotho. He was backed into a corner, jabbing frantically with his spear. The wyrm ignored him. It had coiled itself around Kurk and was squeezing him like a boa constrictor. Its head had split open lengthwise to reveal a leechlike maw full of stone teeth. As Aliara watched, it dove in and savaged Kurk's shoulder. He howled again and struggled weakly in its grip.
Aliara tensed herself and leapt. She had no idea what effect her dagger would have on this beast, and no fear of finding out. She had forgotten how good this felt: companions at her side, the simplicity of a clean fight. No moral conundrum here. It was kill or be killed.
She landed hard and felt the wind leave her lungs. The wyrm was unnaturally warm, as though magma pumped through its veins in place of blood. It whipped its body around, perhaps trying to dislodge her, but she clung on tightly. The rocky spurs that jutted from its side were as good as pommels for keeping her on. With the fingers of one hand clutching the closest spur, she raised her dagger in the other.
Ting! The blade rebounded from the wyrm's stony skin. Frustrated, Aliara tried again, aiming for a joint. There was a little give there, but the thing's hide was leathery and thick, and her blade could find no purpose. "The eyes!" Lotho shouted at her. "Aim for the eyes, there's--"
She never found out what he was going to say next. The wyrm roared again and whipped its body around. A stony coil the width of a wine barrel struck Lotho in the chest, lifting him up and propelling him into the wall. His head struck a rocky outcropping with a sickening crack and his body flopped bonelessly to the ground. At nearly the same moment, the wyrm opened its jaws wide and closed them around Kurk's head. Aliara looked away, wincing at the gurgling scream and wincing again when it was abruptly cut off. The wyrm rolled over and she lost her grip. She tumbled to the cave floor, her dagger clattering away across the rocky ground. She tried to climb to her feet, but a rocky fluke struck her on the forehead and knocked her senseless.
In a way, that was a mercy. She wasn't conscious when the wyrm, tired of its meal, turned on her. The great jaws descended again, and Aliara's light went out forever.
