Chapter 4 by TheSecretlyUnlikelyDuck TheSecretlyUnlikelyDuck

Is he still alive?

No, she's too late

Her heart fluttering in her chest, Elyn makes her way to the elf on the ground as quickly as she dares without making noise. She pauses several times, listening and looking around like a nervous fawn. Each time she is able to muster the courage to continue, her drive to protect the lives of all elves is stronger than her fear. Everything is still, nothing at all stirs and the eerie silence makes her even more cautious. But with no sign of the disgusting little monstrosities she can't justify leaving this poor man. After what feels like an eternity, she reaches his now motionless form.

A chill runs down her spine when she realizes his chest isn't moving. She's never seen a dead elf before, at least not so close. She stares at the warrior for a second until she collects herself enough for her training to kick in, and she leans down to feel his neck for any sign of a pulse. Her initial fears are confirmed; he's definitely not alright; but she won't give up on him without a fight. Frantically she tries the most powerful healing spell taught to her in her short apprenticeship; but his wounds are to great, too much time has passed; still no life stirs within the soldier. Sniffing back tears she leans down and closes his eyes.

Those damn little goblins! how could such disgusting, such stupid little creatures be the ones responsible for this?! In all of her tine growing up, longer than a human lifetime, she had always heard of them discussed with such disdain. Short even by elf standards, it was said that not a one of them was above four feet tall and their ugly little faces filled her with disgust. Everyone said they can't construct or build, merely squatting in abandon mines, caves, and castles; even their clothes and equipment are pieced together from the scraps left behind by more dangerous monsters. Despite this they often attack in swarms, no doubt it was only their high fertility and numbers that kept them alive at all. She honestly couldn't think of a being lower down on the ladder of life; which made it all the more devastating that these lowly creatures would be part of her people's fall.

She's still looking down at the elf when she hears a noise behind her. She spins on the balls of her to see six goblins coming up the steps towards her, less then ten feet way. She spins around and realizes she's been surrounded by more than a dozen of the creatures. The ones on the steps have frozen, their yellow eyes locked on the young elf girl's form like cats about to pounce. Elyn moves to doge back into the street, but this seems to trigger them and in unison all of the little green creatures explode into motion.

Elyn tries to run, but they're everywhere. She jumps over one goblin runs at her with open arms, trying to throw himself onto her legs and tackle her, but he sails past when she jumps up over him. She lands on her feet, feigning left and then heading right. With all of her might she runs but doesnt get far. A second later she glances over her shoulder just in time to see one leap onto her back. he grasps her collar, tearing the back of her shirt open with a loud rip; it's barely hanging on her shoulders now. She stumbles and another one of the agile monsters dives and wraps his arms around her legs. She falls with a thud and can only struggle for a second before all of them are on her. She feels herself being pinned down, countless tiny scaly hands run over her, their sharp clawlike nails pressing against her flawless, smooth, freckled skin

What do they do to her?
