Chapter 34

Was this a bridge too far?
No, it was a bridge we traveled together
I was nervously making breakfast when Charissa came down from her shower, wearing her white towel as usual.
"Hey," I said simply.
"Morning!" she chimed. "Thanks for letting me use your shower!"
Slightly taken aback by her cheeriness, I replied in kind, "No problem, glad it worked out."
"Yeah, it was really nice," she said. "Much more comfortable than the downstairs shower. It's way roomier, and tidier, and there's less stuff in there. And the water pressure is excellent."
"Oh, well, I'm glad you liked it."
"I really did, thanks!" she said. As she neared the basement door, she seemed suddenly embarrassed. "Wait, I mean, I didn't mean to complain about the other bathroom. I'm really grateful you're letting me stay here, and you've been really hospitable. I didn't mean--"
"It's fine," I laughed. "Who'd want to share a small bathroom with two kids anyway?"
"You sure?" she said.
"Yeah, I get it."
"OK, well, thanks again!" She disappeared into the basement.
This gave me another idea.
Over breakfast, I told the kids about the clog and that I'd be getting a plumber soon. And when they were getting dressed and Charissa was sipping her coffee and scrolling her phone, I mentioned, "You know, you could just keep using the upstairs shower if you want."
She looked up. "What do you mean?"
"Well," I said, "I was thinking about what you said. It is kind of a drag to share your bathroom with the kids, and we're comfortable around each other now anyway. So, you can just keep using the upstairs bathroom to shower and stuff." I was trying to say upstairs bathroom instead of the shower in my bedroom to avoid creeping her out.
"Wait, are you sure? I wouldn't be intruding?"
"No, not at all. You're perfectly welcome."
"Well," she said with a smile. "That sounds really nice."

This should be fun!

Babysitter Moves In
A summer of fun with a recent college grad
Charissa babysat my kids all four years that she attended the Christian college down the road from us. She needed a place to stay after graduation, so I made a deal: Free room and board in exchange for nannying all summer long. Neither of us could predict where this new arrangement might lead...
