Chapter 16
by carnivorous cow
Does Druuna eat the stew?
No, it could be poision.
Druuna looked at the stew for awhile and decided not to eat it. She had bought some food at the settlement and she was really that hungry after eating the bread she had been given with the stew. She left the still full bowl on the rickety table in her room. Druuna then made sure to lock her door with the key the innkeeper had given her and made sure to put her belongings near her, remembering the settlement guard’s warning about Petzer’s thieving ways.
With her meal finished and having already washed up a bit, Druuna took off her shoes and hoses and crawled into the rooms small bed. The mattress was stuffed with straw, it’s springs having long ago been scavenged and sold away to some small town blacksmith. The cushions too were only old pillow cases stuffed with straw, but Druuna hadn’t slept in any bed for awhile and she quickly felt into a deep, dreamless sleep.
Sometime in the night Druuna woke to the sound of a key rattling in a lock and footsteps. She was still only half awake when the door to room was opened and Petzer and his burly guard rushed in. Druuna’s survival instinct kicked in and she grabbed her pocket knife and ran forward, not sure what was going on, only knowing that she couldn’t let herself be cornered in the close quarters of the room. The larger man made to grab her wrist, but Druuna ducked under it and planted her knife in the mans wrist. He roared in blind agony and knocked his head against the wall. Petzer made a grab at her, but Druuna was in shape and the fat man was very slow. Druuna planted a kick to the greedy innkeeper’s chest, knocking the wind out of him and leaving him hyperventilating in a pile.
Druuna quickly grabbed her hoses, shoes and knife and scurried down to the first floor, hoping to get far away before Petzer regained his breath or his guard regained consciousness. As she ran out the door of the inn she made sure to grab a hold of one of the innkeepers cap pouches, knowing even in her panic that she would be needing money later on.
Druuna ran down the forest road for awhile, until she was sure that nobody was following her. Taking a moment to rest, Druuna opened the bag and found that it had sixty-five bottle caps in it, giving her a total of seventy-one caps with what she already had in her pockets. Druuna put her hoses and shoes on and got up. She put the caps in her pocket and left the bag they had been in on the ground as she set off once more through the forest. Night was nearly over, and she thought she could make out the sun beginning to peak over the horizon.
What happens to Druuna next?
