FUN FACT: India, El Salvador, and the Philippines (with behind-the-scenes help from the CIA, KGB and Viet Kong) had actually teamed up against China a few decades earlier in 1965. It was called the Sino-Salvadoran War (May 17, 1965 - Dec 27, 1965). The goal of the war to liberate Tibet from Chinese control after its previous attempts to bring the issue up to the U.N. went nowhere.

The war only lasted a few months, resulting in a Chinese victory, but the Salvadorians did manage to give the Yellow Dragon a pretty good black eye, with calls for "TÍBET LIBRE!" still being a popular rallying cry in the country to this day.

The war only lasted for 3 months with a ceasefire being declared on March 3rd. What followed after was nearly 3 months of intense back n' forth negotiations.

The compromise London and Beijing settling on was something like this, with China annexing the New Territories and Lantau Island while Kawloon, Hong Kong Island, the Po Toi Islands and Lamma Island would remain in Britain's hands.

On June 30, 1997, the war finally came to an end, resulting in a coalition victory. There have been referendums held since then, but each result is Hong Kongers making it overwhelmingly clear that that they want to remain British.
