Chapter 12
by rerun333
Are you willing to abandon Mathis to a fate worse than ?
No, Damn it, No.
You might have stolen coin from your parents, but this is different, and for some reason you feel drawn to this rogue of a man. You have to figure out how to use the gem for the both of you. You take a drink from the canteen, and as you swallow the refreshing water you suddenly realize what he must've had planned.
You lean down upon Mathis' body and smell his stink and feel his body heat upon you. You grab his necklace from his neck and wrap it around the both of your necks, unfortunately due to how small the necklace is you are now face-to-face on the ground. You remember how Mathis told you that all he has to do is rub the gem and he's invisible and you do the same. The gem glows a slight blue and you feel a strange warmth over you. You hope that worked.
You cannot move to look at the approaching horse-men for fear that the gem might stop working, so you can but stay there on the ground and hear them coming. Their stomping hooves are getting closer and closer and you pray to any gods that are willing to listen that they do not stomp upon you.
Lucky enough they do not and the men stop their horses about twenty feet away from you. Thankfully, they are close enough for you to hear them.
"I'm telling you I saw two people here," one says.
"You're a damn idiot," another responds. You swear you've heard this voice before
"I'm afraid I have to concur with the Sergeant, soldier, there will be punishment for wasting my time here," one responds authoritatively.
"Captain, I swear I didn't mean to waste our time, but I saw a girl and a body on the ground around here," the same whiny voice says once more. You try to hold your breath and hope Mathis doesn't start snoring.
"The Commander sent us here to scout these parts for the escaped convict, and he will not be pleased that we've not finished the entire patrol before nightfall. We'll have to rest at the nearby town and that will cost coin, it is coming out of your pay, and I suggest you visit a priest for these visions of yours while we are there," the annoyed voice responds.
You hear a snicker from the Sergeant.
"Do you have something to add, Sergeant?" the Captain asks.
"Hmm, no sir, I'm just thankful you allowed me the use of your horse to look for my guardsman, Doneti. He was sent after a thieving girl, so I must assume he's dead now," he says. You do know this voice! It's Sergeant Reel, the head of your village guard.
"It was no problem Sergeant, I suggest you come with us to the town so we can put up her description along with our convict, two birds with one stone after all," the Captain says as they start to trot away.
You almost died from the fear that those men would find you and Mathis. Apparently fear is also very tiring, as you sat there listening to the horses as they left, you yourself have passed out.
How do you two fugitives feel when you awake?
