Next evening
The next evening, the air in the village is thick and humid, signaling a coming storm. When you arrive at the Sarutobi estate, the front door isn't just unlocked—it is slightly ajar, as if the person inside cannot bear even a second's delay of your entry.
Inside, the house is dim. No dinner is waiting on the table this time. Instead, Kurenai is standing in the center of the living area, still dressed in her full flak jacket and mesh armor, as if she has just returned from a mission herself. But her hair is slightly disheveled, and her breathing is audible the moment you step into the room.
"You're late," she says. Her voice lacks its usual melodic lilt; it is flat, strained, and dangerous.
"I had a report to file," you say casually, leaning against the doorframe. "Professional duties, as we discussed. Ready to continue our lecture on the sensory dampeners?"
Kurenai doesn't answer with words. She crosses the room in three quick strides, the floorboards creaking under her uncharacteristically heavy steps. She stops inches from you, the scent of jasmine and sweat radiating off her. The "disciplined kunoichi" is nowhere to be found. Her eyes are bloodshot, her pupils blown wide, tracing every line of your face with a starvation that is almost feral.
"I didn't sleep," she hisses, her hand trembling as she reaches out, not to touch you, but to grip the collar of your vest. "Every time I closed my eyes, I felt that seal pulsing. Every sound in this house—the wind, the clock, my own heart—felt like you were mocking me. I tried to meditate. I tried to focus my chakra. But all I could think about was how you looked at that bedroom door and then walked away."
She yanks on your collar, pulling your face down to hers. Her forehead presses against yours, her skin burning hot. "No more lectures. No more 'professional development.' You said you broke me, and you were right. I can't even function as a shinobi right now because my head is so full of the things you did to me."
She lets out a frustrated, shaky breath, her composure finally shattering completely. "If you walk out that door tonight to 'check in' later, I might actually kill you. Or myself. Take me to the room. Now."
