Dan found himself being shoved headfirst into the lockers on Monday morning before he had even got to class.

“You think you can just walk back in after what you did?” A familiar voice screamed at him.

Dan shifted round slightly and found himself looking up at Curtis. Curtis was a tall, muscular black guy. Dan was tall, and Curtis still had a few inches over him. Curtis had not taken it well when Dan had walked from the team last year. Dan had given his former teammates a wide berth, as while he at least thought he had decent reasons for leaving it had also cost them the State championship. Donna had at least begun to forgive him and talk to him again. He had not really spoken with either Curtis or Lauren for months.

“Morning, Curtis,” Dan replied, trying not to sound sarcastic.

“Donna might be willing to forgive. I'm not. I should have fucked you up when you cost us state last year.” Curtis snarled.

Dan looked over and could see Randy, Nicole and Emma standing nearby, watching the scene unfold with concern. He could see Randy and Emma whispering to each other. Dan gave them both a look to stay back.

“Dude. I know I should never have walked, and it's going to be hard to let me back in. We can be teammates. We don't need to be friends.” Dan replied trying to calm.

“Curtis. Leave it. I know it's frustrating. Don't do anything stupid.” A female voice across the corridor stated.

Dan watched Lauren walk up and put her hand on Curtis shoulder. Curtis seemed to calm a little. He slammed a fist into a locker right above Dan's head.

“Just crawl back to your fucking stoner friends, McNamara,” Curtis shouted before storming off down the corridor.

Dan saw Lauren standing over him and offering him a hand. He took it, and she helped him up. Lauren was a five-foot-five, Chinese American girl. She had quite long black hair, brown eyes and a really soft face. Dan had been fairly close to her when he was on the swim team. Lauren hadn't taken Dan's departure as a betrayal like Curtis had, but had kept her distance due to not wanting to anger the others if she had remained on friendly terms.

“Sorry about Curtis, Dan. He didn't take it well when you left, and he's not really happy about Tabitha trying to bring you back onto the team.” Lauren told him.

“That's kind of an understatement,” Dan replied.

“I'm glad you're back, though,” Lauren said, hugging him.

Dan heard Nicole clearing her throat when she watched this.

“Hey, Nicole. You've hooked up with Dan, haven't you?” Lauren asked.

Nicole walked over and kissed Dan on the cheek. He wasn't sure if she was being protective or jealous in response to Lauren's actions.

“Hey, Lauren. Yeah, we've been together for a few weeks now.” Nicole said, sounding a little aggressive.

“Well, I have class to get to.” Lauren excused herself.

“Are you okay?” Nicole asked.

“Maybe a little bruised, that's all,” Dan replied, hugging her.

“I so would have fucked him up for you,” Randy mentioned.

“Easy there, Butterbean.” Emma joked.

“I love you guys, but this one is my problem to fix”, Dan told them.

.“I'm not going to stand by while someone attacks my boyfriend,” Nicole said protectively

“Curtis is all sound and fury he'll calm down, hopefully,” Dan replied, trying to reassure Nicole.

“Lieke said they are announcing the rest of the roles for the play this morning,” Emma advised.

The group parted and headed to their respective classes. Dan stepped inside the drama classroom and found that several of his fellow students were yet to arrive. He saw that Amy was here and that Matty had joined the class. He ignored Amy's familiar scowling and walked over to speak with Matty. Dan hadn't spoken with him since the Blades game in Lionel's basement over a month ago.

“Didn't realise you were in this class, man? Dan asked.

“I switched, as I asked Ms Miller if I could be in the play. A lifetime as a minmaxer has prepared me for the stage. “ Matty joked.

Dan saw Lieke looking at the pair of them, and he waved her over.

“Morning, Dan. Matty.” Lieke greeted them both.

“Sorry I didn't get back to you on Saturday. I was out with Nicole.” Dan explained.

“If you are free sometime this week, we could go over the lines?” Lieke suggested.

“Yeah. I think I'm free some nights.” Dan replied.

The pair of them turned to face the front of the class as Ms Miller was starting this morning's class. He also noticed two girls he did not recognise who were standing near her. One of the girls was a slim redhead who had an athletic look to her., she was wearing a pink T-shirt and black skirt. The second girl caught his attention almost immediately, though. She had midnight black hair, and makeup on to give her face a white complexion, purple eyeshadow, black eyeliner and dark red lipstick, she had drawn black spirals in make up around her eyes. She was wearing a red velvet dress with a black corset around her middle.

“Morning, class. I have a few announcements to go over. First of all, you may have noticed we have two new arrivals in class.” Ms Miller advised.

She pointed towards the redhead girl. “This is Elena. She's moved here from California. Did you say you were on the cheer team at your old school?” Ms Miller said, introducing her.

Elena nodded in reply. “ Nice to meet everyone.”

“And this is Gwendoline.” Ms miller said, indicating the girl with the Gothic look to her.

Dan was amused when Gwendoline did not say anything and just raised one hand apathetically.

“Did you say previously had stage experience, Gwendoline?” Ms Miller asked her.

Dan watched Gwendoline roll her eyes. “I once played Eliza in My Fair Lady..... I was ten.”

“Well, we still have some roles to cast in our production.” Ms Miller told her.

Gwendoline clearly just wanted her new teacher to get on with things and stop making her the centre of attention.

“Well anyway, moving on to your next announcement. We've cast some of the roles in our upcoming production of Romeo and Juliet. Dan is playing Romeo alongside Lieke as Juliet. Amy will be playing Tybalt. Matty will be playing Benvolio. We still have quite a few roles to cast.” She announced.

Dan noticed Amy seemed quite pleased with being cast in a role adversarial to one he was playing. He couldn't help but smirk at the casting himself. Ms Miller told them to get into small groups to study a scene from the play. Dan saw Elena group up with a group of students he did not talk to that much. He saw Gwendoline approach his group consisting of Lieke, Matty and himself.

“Can I join you guys?” She asked, sounding slightly anxious.

“We definitely have room for one more,” Lieke said happily.

“It's Gwendoline, right?” Dan asked.

“Only my parents call me Gwendoline. I prefer Gwen.”

“Nice to meet you, Gwen.” Matty greeted her.

They all warmly welcomed Gwen and shared a copy of the play with her. Gwen quickly warmed up to them and joined in with practising the lines from the play.

“Miller mentioned you have acted before?” Lieke asked.

“I was just trying to act aloof before. We used to have a really fun amateur dramatic group back at my old school. Plus a couple of used to game with each other that was always fun. I'd love to play Lady Montague. I can't deny the charm of playing a mother who gives into grief.” Gwen explained to them.

“When you said used to game?” Matty asked, clearly excited.

“I used to run Call of Cthulhu with some of my friends. We move around a lot due to my Dad's work so he bought me D&D books as a means of getting to know new friends. Why?” Gwen asked.

“He's an RPG nerd. We should introduce you to Lionel.” Dan told her.

“He's our GM,” Matty explained.

“Well, if you guys are looking for new players,” Gwen replied.

Gwen had a sheepish look on her face. “You guys know anyone who sells green?”

Dan and Lieke both laughed. “I'll introduce you to Randy as well he's one of my best friends.”

Dan heard the familiar chime of a new message on his phone.

Class ended with Lieke and Gwen heading off to their next class. Dan advised he would meet up with them at lunch before heading to the janitorial closet to meet up with Nicole. He knew Manny would likely be getting high in his car and nowhere near the closet at this time in the morning. He waited until nobody else was around and quickly stepped inside.

The lighting inside the closet was not the best, but he could make out someone bent over a box or a bench on the other side of the small closet.
