Chapter 4 by mask mask

Aspects of magic

Names

You may haven noticed that most merfolk do not seem to have names. Indeed this is the case, for naming merfolk should never be done lightly. Names to us is a magic thing. It changes our nature and begins the process of carving our fates into stone.

You'll find that the appearances of the named often stay the same, transformation will come to them with much greater difficulty.

Even temperament and personality, so ever flexible and mutable for most merfolk, will solidify after a naming.

You don't know a single named merfolk, you say? Do not think as such. Named merfolk, though rare in the ocean, often make up important corner stones of merfolk society. Should you ask around, you'll likely learn that you have already met a couple with names. In fact, your's truly has a name: "The Librarian".

But, once again, beware of learning these names. For names have strong ties to Fate, one of the most mysterious domains of magic. By merely knowing a name you may entangle yourself into their fate.
