Mutual Avoidance

Tara secured a good deal for Serena Grant. 2.2 Million in damages. The press were on them as soon as they left the building. Serena loved the attention. She needed people to know the truth. That she would never sell them false promises. But Tara knew her client. She had been doing this covertly for years.

But it wasn’t Tara’s problem anymore. She got into the black Mercedes and back to the firm. She was very good at compartmentalising her life. Family. Boyfriend. Friends. Work. None of them intermingled very much. Neat in their own little boxes.

It had been three years and she had not introduced Ramesh to her parents. He was making it easier for her to do so. Not interested much in family himself. He had not introduced her to his parents either. It was a mutual avoidance.

Her friends. Well. They were friends on paper. They had brunches and drinks. But everything was surface level. Shallow. Everyone in their late twenties just wanting to have fun and enjoy their new money. Anything deep would mean exile.

Tara got out of the car. Wearing her executive white and grey ensemble. Gold chain glinting in the afternoon light. Busy central district. Office workers walking in a mess like molecules of water.

Morgan & Peterson. The firm. She knew that at least work was solace.
