Chapter 3

1 Week Later
Municipal Square
You arrive at municipal square, a western part of the city that holds courthouses the mayors office and more then a few high end businesses, not that you’ve ever frequented any of them.
Boutiques, salons, classy hotels and 5 star restaurant dot the district, interspersed by municipal buildings and the occasional private residence.
Today your destination is the Westside precinct, today you’re here to register, a member of the Westside Heroes Precinct promised that he’d vouch for you, hopefully giving you a fast track on your hero career.
You step towards the large grandiose building, clearly more well funded than the other precincts; you guess the politicians like to look at pretty buildings.
The main reception area is thankfully sparse, at the desk is a peppy looking older lady with hair so long that it has to be coiled several times to keep off the floor, and it seems to be… wriggling…?
“Well good morning to you, young lady! What can I do for you today?”
“Im here to register! Is Bulwark around?” You say craning your neck to look past her deeper into the building.
“Ah you must be that plucky young thing that helped apprehend Jake the other day, right?” She asks rhetorically.
“Well I wouldn’t really say plucky but… uh… yeah… yeah I am..” you reply, gently rubbing a hand at the back of your neck.
She picks up her phone presumably calling her boss “Ms Grant? She’s here to see you” she says, waiting a beat for the person on the other end of the phone to reply before setting the handheld back onto its perch.
The receptionist stands, with a small gesture to follow behind she leads you down the hall behind the desk, as you pass the various rooms you spot several hero’s you know from tv.
There’s The Bard, a man a little older than yourself he sports an outfit that belongs more in a renaissance fair than a battlefield.
From what you know his powers stem from his music, you don’t really know if it’s magic or some specific type of psyonics.
And you also spot Chad Stevens, a hero who’s gone through a bit of turbulence sense going public with his identity, it seems no matter how big you grow there’s always a problem you can’t crush.
You assume the other hero’s are out on a call at the moment, your tour ends at the office of your future boss, the illustrious Alison Grant aka Gold Star.
It’s said that she could have joined the largest national team in America after her work during the first invasion, but she opted for her home city.
Gold Star has been known for her excursions into space, being one of the few heroes that can breathe in space meant she’s more often then not the person who has to fly up their to stop any meteors heading towards the planet.
Her other powers consist of a fly speed that’s almost 12x the speed of a military aircraft and the ability to project energy from a golden meteor that’s been burrowed into her chest.
Suffice it to say that you’re a little nervous about meeting her, honestly you kinda had a crush on her for a little while….. still do…
The receptionist raps on the door softly before opening the door, you step through and hear the door shut behind you.
She’s an older woman, old enough to be your mom at least, with smooth caramel colored skin and golden eyes that see through you, her elegant features are framed on either side by golden hair that pulses with glowing energy, surrounding her head in a strange aurora effect in the space around her head.
“Please, take a seat, we’ve much to talk about” she says as she sets some paperwork to the side of her desk, steeple-ing her fingers together as she stares at you from across her desk.
“So before we start I need you to know that I only take on straight shooters here, the last thing I want on my plate is a Resolute scandal, you feel me?”
“I'm on the level” you reply as cooly as you can manage, she stares into your eyes for a moment before giving a small nod.
“Great, now about the encounter with the snake, the way Bulwark tells it you saved his ass, so now I wanna hear you tell it” she says leaning forward in her chair, her eyes narrowing ever so slightly as though studying your every micro expression.
“Well… uh… Bulwark needed backup and I…. Happened to get to the scene first…”
“Yeah that seems to be your thing… I had some of the analysts draw up a file on you… seems your fast… and that’s about it… no regeneration, no phasing through walls, so tell me, why should I hire you on? There’s plenty of fast capes I could recruit from… plenty have applied…” she says, her words not necessarily mean, more so cold, laying out the facts without any hint of animosity.
“I… was told Bulwark will vouch for me…” you say feeling slightly confused by this turn of events, a well respected hero gave you the nod, your track record while short is still spotless and you just aided in the arrest of a big name villain.
“He did which is why I’m even considering taking on a rookie as an official position. Now, I asked you a question, why should I take you on?” She replies, the tone of her voice not changing a bit as she stares you down.
You steel yourself, it’s clear she isn’t convinced, and you have the feeling that playing it safe isn’t going to cut it, you need to surprise her, she knows your top speed and your track record, she needs to hear something new and so you summon up as much inner strength as you can muster before you speak.
“Because, you need new blood, over half of all the capes in this precinct are approaching retirement age, some are already there, you have some damn fine capes but if you don’t recruit new blood soon all their experience and training will be lost and you’ll need to scramble to fill positions, you NEED me” there’s a long silence as she looks into you, those golden eyes staring into your soul as she absorbs your words, weighing them up in her mind.
“Alright, I can offer you up as a sidekick to one of our senior members for a trial period and if you can convince them that your worth being put on the team by the end then you can become a hero in full”
“Sound good?” She asks though the question is clearly rhetorical, she turns her attention back to the stack of papers, pulling free a single sheet, sliding it across the desk to you. “Fill that paper out and hand it back to Ms Demeter out front”
“Oh.. um yeah, alright..” you mumble, your attention now held by the form asking information about everything from the nature of your power to your home address, though your not thrilled with giving out this information, you begin to sign on the various dotted lines.
As you scratch your personal information onto the form, you hear Gold Stars voice in the background, just barely able to make out her words.
“Alright, I’m assigning you to…”
