Mother return to the living room
As the mother turned away from the mirror, her gaze drifted towards the bathroom door, and she felt a sudden urge to return to the living room. She pushed the door open, and her eyes adjusted to the brighter light in the hallway. The sound of her heels clicking on the hardwood floor seemed amplified, and she felt a sense of unease with each step.
As she descended the stairs, her hand grasped the railing, and she felt a slight tremble in her fingers. The living room came into view, and she saw Ms. Thompson sitting on the couch, her eyes fixed on a book in her lap.
As the mother reached the bottom of the stairs, she took a deep breath, trying to steady her nerves. She glanced towards the living room and saw her daughters, Emily and Sarah, sitting on the couch, engrossed in their phones. She felt a pang of guilt, realizing that she had neglected them while being preoccupied with Ms. Thompson's arrival.
Ms. Thompson looked up from her book and smiled at the mother. "Your daughters are so lovely, ma'am," she said, her voice low and soothing.
The mother nodded, her eyes lingering on her daughters for a moment.
