What kind of eel do you want to know more about?
Moray ell
Merfolk Generalisations
Although most merfolk usual possess great diversity within a species. General traits these merfolk have in common are aggression, fearlessness, opportunism, persistence once the've set their sights on a goal which is more often than not motivated by a desire for instant gratification and a general lack of empathy or sympathy.
Not so endearing traits, indeed, these thick skinned merfolk are one of our seas brands of psychopaths and many merfolk are wary of this kind. Not wary enough, however, for many a mermaid and merman have suffered heartbreak and more by the the teeth of these vicious creatures. And the females are as bad as the males.
You think that this mermaid is biased? Not at all, this information is gathered not only from personal experience but from the tragic stories of many an encounter, most of which never realised what predicament they were falling in until too late.
Moray ell Merfolk or Moray merfolk for short, are beautiful creatures. Even if their colouring doesn't happen to be stunning, their sinuous and graceful movements are enough to fascinate anyone.
Soft to the touch and sensual, these creatures make great one night stands and offer fantastic deep-throat blowjobs with their pharyngeal jaws, able to swallow almost any size. Just don't make the mistake that they make good lovers. Charming they may be, repeated lovemaking there may be, but it is only about the easy sex for them.
Charismatic, beautiful and dangerous make for an irresistible honey trap. Beware of dark and narrow caves for you may find yourself grabbed and pulled in, where you risk never coming out.
If you do survive an **** from these smiling predators, don't bother going to the merfolk courts against them. The Moray eel community is infamous for accusing the victim of first aggression and claiming self defence. What is worse is that these slippery fellows frequently get away with it having the victim believe the story themselves.
The only explanation, this librarian can find for this repeatedly unjust outcome is magic. Though Moray merfolk, like many other merfolk of the eel variety seldom flaunt their magical abilities, there is plenty of evidence that it is used in dark and underhanded way.
However, to their credit, as long as merfolk stay out of whatever territory they have laid claim to and don't actively seek to disturb them while they are not on the hunt, unpleasant encounters with these creatures may easily be avoided.
Honeycomb Moray Eel
Moray eels in detail
Appearance & features
Moray eels have the typical fused Doral, anal and caudal fin and most verities lack pectoral and pelvic fins. Along with an elongated, soft skinned body. Moray eels often have thick skins which produce a lot more mucuses than other eels and in some varieties this mucous is toxic.
Moray's have small circular gills on the sides of their heads, which require them to keep their mouth's open in order to breath.
With small eyes, these eels have poor eyesight and rely primarily on their sense of smell, often possessing pronounced nostrils.
Moray eels often have bright or distinct patterns which help them camouflage in their habitats. Where they often hide in crevices and cracks to wait and ambush their prey.
Many of these eels have long teeth to bite chunks out of their quarry or cold on to slippery pray. Some species of moray eels even have teeth on the roof of their mouth. A unique feature of the Moray is their second jaw, called the pharyngeal jaw located in their throat which clamps down creature in their mouth and pulls them further into their gullet.
Reproduction & lifespan
Moray eels like many other eels and fish will spawn, the time and place for such is decided primarily by the abundance of food and an adequate environment with waters that are warm enough.
These eels will mate in pairs and have a mating ritual which often starts off by the male and female baring their teeth at each other then descend into a sensual entwinement, heads side by side and caressing each other. They will spawn and release the sperm simultaneously. Which also signals the end of their relationship.
Moray eels live on average 10-40 years.
Behaviour & habitat
Moray eels are solitary and are found primarily in tropical or temperate seas though some varieties may be found in brackish or fresh water.
Preferring places with many caves and crevices Moray eels are primarily found in coral reefs or lagoons. They go out hunting mostly at night and tend to take shelter during the day.
Though, as opportunistic hunters, should prey pass their lair they will lunge out to grab it. Once a creature is in their maw they will persistently attempt to swallow it by any means. Likewise if they feel threatened by a predator they may also attack.
Diet & food chain
Most Moray eels hunt at night and will either swallow their prey whole or pull them into crevices where they can tare them apart or manoeuvre their pray to swallow them headfirst especially for larger prey. To create more leverage the eels may tie themselves into knots in order to pull prey out of crevices or pull off pieces.
Their primary source of food comes from smaller fish, cephalopods (such as cuttlefish and octopuses) and crustaceans (crabs). But have documented to attack more difficult prey such as sea snakes, puffer fish, lion fish, and even small sharks though these attempts seldom succeed.
Few sea creatures want to mess with Moray eels. Their main predators are apex hunter such as Sharks, Bracudas, Groupers, sea snakes and Humans. Humans primarily catch moray eels commercial. Many moray eels are toxic to humans and can not be eaten however some moray eels are kept in aquariums as decorative fish.
