The Base Classes

Monk

Monks are an interesting class within the land of Gristhaia, and are a rarity within this land. Their abilities are shrouded in mystery, and they are not keen to share their secrets, so a mystery they remain. They are often pacifists, who tend to carry on about their lives in peace and harmony, but can unleash a surprising amount of power when **** to defend themselves. They often use exotic weapons, or forgo the use of weapons entirely. The feats of speed, acrobatics, and agility that monks are capable are astounding, and that does not even begin to touch on their supernatural abilities that they gain later in their career.

A monk is a person who follows an ascetic lifestyle, often with strict ethical codes of conduct. They often venerate deities and/or ideals, often denying the self in order to better seek them. This asceticism enables them to reach an enlightened state of being to accomplish things that most mortals would deem magical or supernatural. The monks know that every sentient being is capable of these feats, but few are willing to sacrifice what is necessary in order to perform them. Monks are among the most disciplined individuals in existence, their dedication to their ideals as passionate as it is consistent.

Monks do not often enter combat, but when they do, it is with a flurry of speed and grace that will leave unprepared opponents wondering what happened as they are rapidly eliminated. Monks practice martial skills as a form of meditation, dedicating several hours each day in training. They are equally skilled in unarmed combat and with the weapons of their respective temple. They can unleash a flurry of armed or unarmed strikes that is almost too quick for the eye to follow, then sprint away at extraordinary speed to face another foe. Though many monks are pacifists causing only nonlethal damage, and only when **** into conflict, others dedicate themselves to pursuits that do not value harmony with one’s neighbors. These monks have no qualms with using lethal **** to eliminate all threats to them or their temples, and do not permit trespassers, invaders, and bandits to leave with their lives.

Most ascetic monasteries are peaceful and benevolent entities within their areas. They are often sources of organized charity, providing orphanages, schools, food stores and pantries for the locals, and are seen as a kind influence in the area. This leads most nobles in the area to officially recognize these monasteries and publicly grant tax relief to these monasteries in the area, which allows them to use their influence to further their benevolence. This often garners the good will of the populace towards both the monasteries, and favor to the nobility. The monks within these orders are in turn, often given the same hospitality and welcome from the locals, who are appreciative of their presence and altruism.

Through training and enlightenment, monks are capable of many extraordinary and even supernatural abilities. Many are immune to diseases and poisons, as well as outside mental influence. Some are capable of shrugging off most magical spells and effects, and some are capable of healing themselves with nothing more than a thought. The highest of monks are able to commune with all sentient beings, and can even reach immortality. These rare monks are impervious to age, and can only be killed through acts of **** or by violent happenstance.

The ascetic monks within Gristhaia are a disciplined and skilled group. They can be kind and altruistic, or they can be isolated and foreboding. Their abilities are often regarded as mysteries to most, and are capable of astounding deeds. Monks can be found on various tasks throughout Gristhaia and their temples are often wealthy. Though any bandits and thieves beware, for monks are a terrifying sight to behold when **** to defend themselves. They are devout in their followings, and almost never sway from their code. For a monk, one’s potential is equal to one’s dedication.
