Molly's Truth

My friend knew better than to give him a chance. I felt like I'd taken the only 'safe' dare from Jack we would see all game; from here on in, if he ever got the chance, he was going to make it somebody's problem. "Truth," she said.

"Lame."

"Just ask me a fucking question. That's the whole game, I don't have to play it the way you want me to," she said with a sneer.

"One of these days you girls are going to have to learn how to have a little fun," said Jack. "If I'm lucky it'll be in the morning. Okay." His smile seemed to darken. "Have you fucked anybody in this circle?" he asked.

Molly's eyes shot straight down to the floor. That was the only answer anyone needed. Normally, I wouldn't judge her for having a hookup; but all the same, I was reeling. Why didn't I know about this? I looked around the circle, trying to find the guilty party. Molly dabbled with girls, I knew, but she'd never mentioned anything going on with Lea. Unless that was the explanation for the weird energy between them when they came in?

A worse thought occurred to me. Both Jack and Harry looked unassuming, but maybe I didn't know either of them as well as I should have. And maybe Molly knew one of them a lot better than I thought.

"You don't need to answer," Paul said feebly.

"She's backing out over a question? I mean, damn, if you really wanted some coke, you could've just asked," Jack said. It was him. It had to be him. The question was a trap. Why hadn't Molly told me? I hated Jack, but it wasn't like I would end our friendship over one stupid mistake. Unless. No, I refused to let myself believe anything had happened between her and Harry. She wouldn’t have hid something like that from me. And she wouldn't have... no, it wasn't possible.

Molly grit her teeth. "Yes, I fucked someone in this circle," she said.

"Who?" Jack said. Definitely him. He was such an ass. What had she seen in him?

"I only have to answer one question, and I did," she said. I could see her sweating. Despite my fears, I patted her on the leg to let her know she wasn't alone. She smiled back at me, but didn't look very reassured. We would have to debrief about this later.
