Chapter 2

*Door chime*

Mills

V didn't even notice at first when the bathroom block's automatic door chimed and opened and someone stepped inside. Mills, a low level techie working under Jenkins' department walked in and halted when he saw V. The counterintel agent's lithe form had always drawn eyes her way, and Mills was no exception. While he was considerably taller than V's 5'6 height, her rank had always made her seem imposing somehow. Not anymore. Bent over the sink, V's toned rear was perfectly contoured in her knee length business skirt. Her pose and lowered head helped create an interesting view for the wide eyed techie.

Mills had heard the gossip, heard the rumours spreading throughout the building and he was having one of the best days at work he'd had in a long time as a result. The 5'11, paunchy aging tech coordinator had harboured resentment for V for her calling his team out, falsely, during an operational fuck up five months previously. He and his team had been chewed out and been docked some pay all in the name of V saving her own ass. And what an ass it was. Hot as she was and as pitiful as she looked right now, Mills couldn't help but be glad that she was finally getting some comeuppance. V's actions had cost Mills the most: passed up for promotions; reputation tarnished and left stagnant in a position he couldn't now get out of. As he looked her up and down, his long running and unspoken anger began to boil up.

The oblivious V was still trying to think up a plan, some way out of this. There had to be one surely? Her mind assumed a fever pace, throwing up possible escape routes left and right. She could pin something on the agents who had been compromised. Nells owed her a favour, could she have documents planted in the paper trail that implicated a patsy agent and absolved her? Messy option though and Nells, while in her debt, wasn't nearly brave or smart enough to stay quiet if he was leant on later. No good, she shook her head and gritted her teeth, fighting back another shudder and a sudden lurch in her stomach. Jenkins maybe? Her boss had as much to lose through this embarrassment to his department as she did. True, V could be scapegoated and it almost seemed like the logical choice, (V would have done the same to someone in her position), but that would drag Jenkins' department into the mud and he wouldn't want that if he could avoid it. V didn't like the man, his leers nor his overt, unwanted flirting but she couldn't deny his talent for navigating the viper's nest that was the Arasaka corporate landscape. That after all, was his job.

She wondered if in saving himself that she too might avoid the noose and survive this. Of course she knew that Jenkins would be under no illusion of V's part in this mess and he'd be due some recompense one way or another. V's nerves got the better of her and the churning in her stomach became unbearable.

All too much
