What's next?
Miles declines
He looks at Jake for a long moment.
Then he looks at Janice, still sitting on the bed, sheet loosely around her, watching him with that unreadable expression.
Then back at Jake.
Miles: you think I am going to share anything with you right now.
Jake opens his mouth.
Miles: after what I just walked in on.
Jake closes it again.
Miles: you've got some nerve man. He shakes his head slowly. Both of you.
He looks at Janice one last time. She holds his gaze without flinching, which is very Janice, but something behind her eyes shifts just slightly.
He turns and walks to the door.
Jake: hey come on man. Don't be like—
Miles: He says it without turning around. goodnight Jake.
He pulls the door shut behind him.
He stands in the hallway for a moment, the muffled sounds of the party rising from downstairs, the anger still sitting somewhere in his chest alongside something else he cannot quite name.
He takes a breath.
Then he heads back down.
The night is not over and he is done wasting it on other people's choices.
