Chapter 9 by latexdoll latexdoll

Stay with them?

Might as well.

The entire next day is walking, searching broken buildings, and more walking. The three of you don't so much as see a single person, it is an odd and creepy feeling. “So how many people are left on the planet?”

“Nobody knows. Well if they do they aren't telling me.” He says laughing. “I heard one old dude say the population of North America was just over a million people. Don't know if he new or was guessing, but I remember him saying it.”

“So where are they?”

“In the new cities mostly. Few folks wander out here like we do, it is very dangerous. All sorts of critters out here to eat you, not to mention the mutants. People twisted and crazy from radiation or chemicals or something, who knows. Hell if you see one, run.”

The day does yield you a rather nice dark green nylon backpack, a green plastic two liter bottle with a lid you keep for water, a small machete with about a thirteen inch blade, a box of 50 rounds of 9mm ammo, which they are instantly excited about and the three of you split it, a spool of 10’ of clothes line, a pair of ripped jeans that fit, 3 pairs of shoes that don't, but they suggest you can sell, and a pair of matching red and black flannel shirts that fit, but seem to emphasize your already apparently manly figure, at least that is what you get from their laughing comments. Every mirror you look in says you are a freaking super model.

You also learn that the main currency are credits. It seems any credit card like object is worth one, dimes and nickels also are worth one, with quarters worth two to five depending on the city, and silver dollars worth ten. Most all cities use bullets as well with a spent case worth one, loaded two, for pistol ammo, and double that for rifle or shotgun. Similarly most give five credits for a sealed small can of food and ten for a big one, less or often nothing if dented or open.

The three of you spend the night in the attic of half of an old building, the other half now little more than a ramp now.

About noon the next day you stroll up to the edge of a walled little city that clearly started as a small mall with a Macy's in it. “Come on Sam, I want to find Sarah, she is going to love you.” With that they pay the one bullet entry fee and the man standing there lets them in.

Pay the fee?
