Chapter 4 by FlightoftheBeers FlightoftheBeers

First Introductions

Meeting with the Mayor

She sat in his office rather nervously. She'd done plenty of research on this guy— fifties, balding, average... so why was her heart pounding? Was it fear? What did she have to be scared of? She could probably kill him in three thousand different ways.

No, she didn't fear him. She was... excited? Her own emotions didn't make sense to her. She wanted to calm her body down, but it seemed to be operating under a different set of rules. Maybe she was just turned on. It didn't necessarily have anything to do with this guy. It just coincidentally happened at the same time. It had been a bit since she'd let loose like that. Maybe she'd let herself do that when she got back to her hotel.

When she was finally allowed in to his office, she saw the man who had been in her mind since she entered the office. He was noting impressive. He was older, balding, and a bit round. But there was something about him.

"Please sit, Ms...?" He stood up and directed her to the couch.

"Davenport. Lily Davenport." She offered him a smile and took a seat. "Thank you for agreeing to meet with me so soon. I know I just arrived into town."

"Of course! I love to meet the new members of the community," he sat down across from her. Between the two of them was a table with some cups and a teapot. She didn't remember them being brought in and she considered herself pretty observational, so she was confused by it. Maybe she was just tired.

As he handed her the cup of tea, she waved him off gently: "oh, no, I'm not moving here. I'm just on vacation. I want to explore what this town has to offer. It's out of the way and I don't need to worry about work or distractions. I can just relax." She took a sip from the tea— it wasn't bad! Not great, but not bad.

"That's what they all say," the mayor laughed, "but everyone falls in love with our cozy little town sooner or later."

"I can see why. It's very relaxing." Lily smiled and finished her tea. While he poured her another cup, she couldn't help but let her mind wander. She'd always been a city girl, so a small town like this had never been on her radar. But maybe a place like this would be a nice change of pace.

"If you want some work to save up some money to get you a nice place, Ms. Carter, I'm sure plenty of people here would be willing to offer you a position. In fact, I have a maid position open here at my house if you'd like it. You'd get your own quarters, pay, and meals." She'd been wary of him from the get-go, but he seemed to be a very genuine man. It wouldn't be the worst job; plus, it would give her an inside look into the mayor's possible role in all of this.

Then again, it was risky. And she didn't particularly want to do maid work.

New job?
