Meeting the heir

You tap your fingers on the large conference table nervously. Abby is sitting beside you, dressed professionally in a pantsuit and looking like a lawyer. You decided against looking too formal, going with the button down shirt and jeans. You're sitting in a windowless conference room of a major law firm downtown that is working for Nigel's apparent heir. It's late in the day and according to Abby, the Nigel's body had already been exhumed and his DNA retrieved for the test. It would take another 3 days for the result, but Abby seems certain that it would be a match. Nonetheless, this Ashley Bottner had agreed to meet today, so here you are.

You and Abby have been waiting for about 10 minutes when a young woman walks in. There were no pictures of Ashley to be found online, but this must be her. She's rather short, around 5'2'' and very thin. She's wearing a blue turtleneck sweater and a pencil skirt. She looks like she was just fresh out of high school, and and she is very cute and pretty. You stay sitting while Abby stands and introduces herself and you to Ashley. They shake hands briefly before Ashley sits down across from you.

"Should we wait for your attorney?" Abby asks.

Ashley shakes her head slightly. "No, that won't be necessary. I just needed this firm to handle the paperwork. We can speak without my attorney," she says. Her voice is rather sweet and as you study her, you can see some resemblance to Nigel, especially in her eyes.

"Great," Abby says, glancing at you before she continues. "Let's discuss your letter and your demands-"

"No need. The letter was clear. I want everything my father left behind."

"Well, in addition to his wealth, your father also left behind a will that explicitly leaves everything to John," Abby continues, unfazed by the interruption.

"A will written a week before his **** by an attorney who had everything to gain from it," Ashley says. "If he had known he had a daughter, he would have left it all to me. A judge will overturn the will."

"They might. Or they might rule that the will stands and you get nothing. It's a gamble for you."

Ashley raises an eyebrow. "So you're here to offer a settlement?"

Abby nods and pulls out a small envelope from her pocket and slides it across the table. You know the contents of the envelope. It has a number that you and Abby agreed on before coming here.

Ashley looks at the number and shrugs nonchalantly. "Pass," she says. She didn't even pause to consider an offer of $20 million.

"You might want to take another look at that," Abby says, clearly puzzled.

"Nope. I'm good. Will that be all?" Ashley says, turning her attention to you.

You hold her gaze for a while. She's smiling confidently, almost arrogantly, and you realize that Abby's methods aren't going to cut it. You'll have to use your magic rings if you want her to drop her case for Nigel's estate. You tap Abby on her shoulder. "Maybe Miss Bottner and I can speak in private and see if we can hash something out," you say.

"Are you sure? I think I should be present," Abby says.

"It's fine. Wait outside, will you?" you say firmly. Abby gets the tone of your voice and she relents and leaves the conference room. Now, it's just you and Ashley.
