Chapter 48 by AnchorPillar

She asked so nicely didn't she?

Meanwhile...

Shauna enjoyed her position as a global moderator for World Tome. Near limitless power and all she had to do was try to help the poor hapless fools who fucked up. Most of them deserved what they got but occasionally, very occasionally, she felt a smidgen of sympathy for one. Most days she floated around the office and did whatever, so long as she didn't step on anyone else's toes the tickets got resolved no one cared.

Right now she was in her apartment, going over her current pet project while half ready for work. A planet hovered over her desk as she fiddled with its mass, several moons floated nearby incase she wanted one. She also needed to design its star and accompanying system, but that would not be today. Unless she wanted to phone it in and copy Earth. Sighing, she froze the planet's timeline and finished getting dressed, maybe she'll have an idea after work.

Despite near endless power at her fingertips she still walked to work, something about remaining sane. Exiting the building her apartment was in today brought her just outside a busy mall. It was very similar to her original world, though a Xerox store selling cell phones was a rarity. Walking past it she confirmed that it was an Apple store in all but name, so something to look up while bored today.

The route always stayed the same: go to the first cross walk on her right to get on the first bus or subway line she saw. At the second stop get off and enter the building of the nearest construction company. Most worlds had very hit or miss public transport, this one was firmly in the middle of quality.

A ten minute ride later she exited the station and entered the office of "Sumner and Family Construction Consultants" only to be brought directly to the calming, gravity-less sphere, that was her office. Unfortunately skipping the 'cubicle farm' meant that Jess had something for her to do and wanted it done now. Jess was a demanding boss, enough to make Shauna wonder sometimes how much of their relationship was made up. She knew the answer and that answer was not a lot, but she still wondered. Resigned, Shauna summoned her keyboards and screens to start the day.

The screens brought up Hana, and immediately Shauna would rather be anywhere else. She had no idea what Hana/John/Jane, whatever had done to earn Jess' attention but after the first thousand iterations or so it lost all meaning. By now she felt more sorry for them than most of the hapless fuckups.

"Status check: 'Change chance' and general safeguards" popped up and Shauna inwardly groaned, knowing this would take all day.

Change Chance was Jess' trademark program, her solution to being unable to mentally change Hana. On a win, Hana got what she wanted, nice and simple with no strings. On a loss Hana got a randomized effect rather than her actual want, and thought she wanted to change that effect instead. It was simple, effective, bypassed mental locks, and thanks to making Hana's copy of World Tome addictive, inevitable.

On the other hand there were no general safeguards, they both knew that. On the iterations that Hana was bound to follow every request there was a possibility that someone could put all the pieces together and make Hana give them their own mostly functional version of World Tome. Jess probably just wanted to make sure no one had tried 'fixing' this in the latest patch.

Still checking those would take a while. Shauna spread out comfortably and got to work.

No big worries here.
