Maybe they are shy?

Their eyes stray from his to focus entirely on the open box of leftover pizza as he set the open box down. They made no move towards it though, just stared at it in silence, so he gently pushed the box towards them. James stopped as they let out two barely audible whimpers and tried to push farther into the corner, the larger one tightening her grip on the smaller.

It seems getting closer to them was a bad idea, and who knows what they would do if he really tried to corner them. What's the saying? Never something something a cornered animal? Well whatever, as strange as this situation was, he couldn't just keep staring at them all day. He needed to find out where they came from, and how they got into a crate in his living room.

Moving slowly, he left the box where it was and moved to the side. On one hand he didn't want to leave them unattended, but he also didn't feel right closing them in the box again. Once James was out of their feild of vision, he searched the outside of the box for some sort of return address, but found nothing. With a frustrated sigh, he went to the kitchen for a drink... Tea, okay? Even after all this, James wasn't the type to drink during the day.

As James was putting the pitcher back into the fridge, however, he heard a loud bump, followed by scrambling feet and more bumps. He didn't even bother to hurry, he already knew what he would find. Sure enough, when he checked the crate it was empty, and the box of pizza was gone. If he wasn't mistaken the bumps he heard led down the hallway to his parents room.

For some reason they preferred their room on the first floor, which makes sense, they were getting on in age. The door was open, which can only mean at least one of them knows how to operate a door handle. James creeped quietly to peek inside the dark room, and make out the two figures in a corner on the room, tearing into both the pizza, and the box.
